Pick 19 historically

Post by KG4Ever »

Here are some of the better players picked at 19 since 2000: John Collins, Tobias Harris, Jeff Teague, Sadiq Bey, Zach Randolph, Jamaal Magloire, Gary Harris, Avery Bradley, Malik Beasley, Kevin Huerter

FNG, I am bumping thread for you.

I'm also adding a link to pick 19 going back to 1997: https://www.statmuse.com/nba/ask/19th-overall-draft-picks-nba

FNG, in addition to John Collins, Tobias Harris, Jeff Teague, Sadiq Bey, Zach Randolph, Jamaal Magloire, Gary Harris, Avery Bradley, Malik Beasley, Kevin Huerter, these players picked at 19th overall were rotational players in year three: JJ Hickson, Jerian Grant, Sasha Pavlovic, Hakim Warrick and Dorrell Wright. Then there are player like Andrew Nicholson averaging 12-15 minutes a game. Is this rotational or not?

While I understand the point you're attempting to get across, this list is pretty underwhelming overall. I do think there will be valuable players picked anywhere in this draft, but it's often a crapshoot and guys can rise or fall for any reason.

I think there is a pretty impressive list of really good players who have been selected at #17 or lower in addition to the many more baseline rotation players selected in that lower part of the draft. Yet, I understand that getting a rotation player, much less a starter or star, is far from a sure thing. And I get the common reference to the draft as a crapshoot. But I refuse to accept that characterization because if the draft is truly a roll of the dice then why on earth are teams paying millions per year on front office staff and scouts?

No successful business on the planet hires executives and managers to roll the dice and hope for the best. Instead, they are expected to produce positive results even if they take calculated risks. The Wolves just spent a boat load of money to hire one of the League's purportedly best basketball executives, even giving him an equity stake in the franchise. They've allowed him to hire whoever he wants to work with him in the front office and I'm sure he's been afforded every resource he could possibly want. So while I understand the historically documented uncertainty of the draft in general, I expect Tim Connelly, Lloyd, MIT grad Gupta and the rest of the gang, with all their scouts and resources, to get at least one if not two eventual starters out of the four picks they have this summer. Will I be surprised if they fail to meet that expectation? No. But as a fan and season ticket holder who has pumped a ton of money and psychic energy into this franchise, I'll be terribly disappointed if they fail.
