NBA Mavericks no longer playing national anthem

I have not heard his reasoning but this is a great thing of course. So I congratulate Cuban for doing the right thing.

I remember growing up being heavily coerced into saying the pledge of allegiance to a silly flag a few thousand times.

Do we have any other more outright silly brainwashing schemes then the Anthem or Pledge of Allegiance?

I'm not sure why a patriotic tradition is being confused with brainwashing. Some people actually still love this country.

Yeah, I may be a sap, but I still get a lump in my throat when I hear the national anthem or America the Beautiful. If I get to a ballgame late and miss the anthem, I feel like I've missed part of the experience.

I actually find Cuban to be an interesting guy in many ways. He doesn't follow the flow, refuses to be typecast and has some unique ideas. But I think he missed the boat on this one.

There is a pageantry to it. It's tradition. With the costs of going to a game for a family, or heck even a person, it's important to make it seem like a big deal. An event.

But things are changing. The league is about 1/4 foreign born... and the league wants a global audience. America is changing, too. If as Americans, we're already viewing patriotism/flags/anthems differently than we did 10 years ago... or even 4+ years ago... imagine what it's like for a global audience.

When you see a flag on a car or even on a house... there's now a perception for many about it. And that's sad. But before we start pointing fingers... it works both ways. Signs of patriotism and virtue signaling about it has become a way to divide our country when for decades/centuries it was used for the complete opposite reasons.

Most are just following along with what those more powerful and influential than us want us to do... because it's good for THEIR business/careers/money-making opportunities. I'm not seeing what any average American gets out of politicizing patriotism. But alas... here we are.

Us vs. Them. Always.

I completely understand your point. I was that way as well for most of my life. That is until I found out the truth about the US GOV and I cannot support it as I find it morally reprehensible. I would be as bad as they are if I did. So it's my moral obligation not to do so.

I don't fault you or anyone who does who does not understand the way the world works, only those that do understand it then continue to do the things they do.

Would it make any kind of sense to revisit the National Anthem? Is this country (at this point) beyond a song like that? Would it make sense if we were going to have that song played at events it could be something that reflected the country we have now or want to be? Take a minute to think about it at least. I'm not absolutely advocating for doing one thing or another but I think it's honestly worth considering.

Sure you can make a snide sarcastic remark. But you don't solve problems until you understand what the problem is.

Snide... sarcastic...

Or smug and condescending.

There are so many fun words to describe people...

Trump didn't win the popular vote the first election.

He sure as hell did this time
