Roller-coaster career so far for Oladipo. OK-ish career to start, but a bit of a disappointment for the 2nd pick in the draft during his first four years. Then - BOOM! - goes nuts with Indiana in year 5 and basically makes himself into a top 15-20 player. Then the injuries hit. Now Miami (of course!) scoops him up for peanuts. He's still only 28 and could be a major factor for them.

Liked him a couple years ago, but he's been on a downslide the past few seasons. I'd worry he would be this past season's version of Ed Davis if we were to pick him up.

All teams are the same...
LA Lakers don't want to pay Dennis Shroder more than $21M per year... or Caruso $9M per year... so they move on to Malik Monk and Kendrick Nunn at $7M per year combined.
And now... the Miami Heat after losing Nunn for $5M... simply turn around and get Oladipo back for $2.3M.
Meanwhile, the Wolves are allegedly wondering if they need to up the offer to Vanderbilt to $6M to keep him.

Meanwhile how many draft picks have the Thunder netted as a result of trading Schoder to the Lakers? I remember them being mocked for for considering him a positive asset when they acquired him from Atlanta.

Perhaps to the surprise of some, I'm going to take this opportunity to praise Gersson. As I've noted in other posts, my biggest fear going into this summer was that Rosas would act rashly and make a bad deal out of desperation or a desire to make a splash. And I've been concerned by reports that he was interested in acquiring Markkanen and Gallo, to stretch forwards who don't come close to filling the team's defensive needs. Thankfully, Rosas appears to have been prudent and resolute in avoiding the temptation to make a bad deal just to make a deal. We might still see Rosas pull the trigger on a major deal for Myles Turner. Like Monster, I'm concerned about Turner's durability. But I could get behind a deal for him, depending on what we ultimately give up because he's at least the type of player the team needs.
In my view, the best case scenario right now, would be signing Tony Bradley or Hartenstein as a free agent or making a relatively minor deal for the likes of WCS. I actually like the WSC idea more and more because I think he and KAT might energize one another as former Kentucky teammates.
Lauri Markkanen is still a free agent. Hadn't signed anywhere yet and spurs are down to 6 million in cap after getting aminu and thad young
Yeah what I am seeing on Markkanen is that he wanted to much for the Spurs so they took Thad Young instead. The Markkanen dream is still alive! :) The Spurs have been throwing money around and Markkanen's asking price was too high? Yikes I don't think the Wolves are going to pay a high price for him either and give up some sort of asset to get him.
Let's do a hypothetical Lip. Let's say the Wolves could sign Markkanen to a deal that would allow them to send one of the cheaper expiring contracts to the Bulls to match salary and give up a 2nd round pick. That could be like paying to get off a contract to sign a player. I'm not for that (somewhat depending on the price tag for Markkanen and length of contract) but it's one way of looking at it. I'm still with you in going with the cheap option. I kinda like Khem Birch I think he might be versatile enough defensively to be a solid fit next to Towns.
Good hypo, Monster. I'm not sure. Looks like Lauri is expecting more money than he deserves. I could see simply swapping Juancho straight up for Lauri in a sign-and-trade. But I'm not sure I'd want to give Lauri more than a year or two though and that probably won't be enough to satisfy Lauri. I'd feel differently if Lauri had defensive potential, but that's the thing he doesn't have, dating back to the time he was drafted. We need size and Lauri has short arms for an NBA big. We need defense and rim protection, but Lauri provides neither. And even worse, he's had durability issues. So if it were me, I'd just cross him off my list entirely.
Re: Offseason trade/FA forum
This post goes out to all the advanced stat experts on this board.
How should we interpret Markkanen's 109.9, and 107.3 def ratings the past two seasons? He had a 112.3 def rating the prior season (2018-19). Is he better defensively than he looks or than his reputation would suggest?
How about Frank Kaminsky? His def rating last season was 107.7. Before then, in the 2015-16 season, he had a 102.5 def rating. Is he perhaps a decent defender the Wolves should consider signing?
Hartenstein had a good 107.7 defensive rating last season, but a 111.9 the season before. How should we interpret those numbers? Is he a good, or potentially good, defender?
For all these guys, are there better, more accurate or predictive advanced defensive stats?
By the way, Millsap's defensive rating last season was 123.2. The season before it was 114.4. As Charles Barkley often says, "Father Time is undefeated.

Is there anyone else regardless of fit that's a guy to put next to Towns left that is worth paying more than 5 million? Millsap (not coming here) that's about all I can see. Pickings are starting to get slim even for some of the guys that we thought would be reasonably affordable options. I'm ok with that though.
I guess some people even some media got it in their head that the Rubio deal was a preclusion to something bigger. That certainly seemed possible but I also thought because of our conversations about how up against the lux tax they were this could also just mean being able to keep Vanderbilt and sign a 15th guy. And allow them some other flexibility for a trade at some point.
I don't think the Wolves will do this and honestly I'm not sure I would either but if they get Vanderbilt signed for around 4 million (they could probably even give him close to 5 million per and keep the number down enough) they could cut a player and still have enough money to sign a vet min guy to a non guaranteed contract like they did with RHJ and be able to cut that guy in season if they needed a bit of space for a trade. There is also the chance they have a young guy from SL that impresses them enough to give them a contract with some real shot of being on the roster...or signed to an actual NBA deal like they did with Reid and then signing another guy that impressed guy to a 2-way deal. These are not sexy moves but Naz Reid I wonder how much he would get if he was a free agent right now. I'm sure it would be at least 4 million. If I had to pick which guy I wants between him and Markkanen I'd probably pick Reid but even if it's dead even or close that's pretty good. There are a lot of really solid to good players being signed this FA that came from these type of end of the roster type moves. Every roster spot matters.
Layman is a guy I could see being moved in some sort of roster/salary move to help another team if there is the right fit/need from another team.
