I really want to believe there is still hope for Wiggins, but deep down and know it's probably time to move him if we can get a somewhat decent deal. I would not be willing to move Okogie, Culver, KDB, Covington or any future first round picks to move him. But I would be willing to take on Waiters or Johnson from Miami. Ideally, we could do a straight swap of Wiggins for Whiteside.

The problem with those deals and Jon K points out is...they don't give you room for the smoldering hype of adding Russell! Now Whiteside is a 1 year deal you could stretch him I suppose which if it meant you get ultimately Russell...sure do it. Heck if the Wolves were really serious about Russell and willing to dig into Glen's pockets for a couple years instead of giving up assets how close could they get trading Wiggins for Whiteside and stretching him and Teague? Those 2 guys would combine for about 46 million in salary and I believe it would be stretched over 3 years so they would have saved 30 million in salary this year. Bingo! I'd guess they could find a way to move Teague with assets to make it worth not stretching him but Whiteside yeah. Plus you never know maybe one of those guys takes a buyout that lowers that number a bit. I mentioned that about Teague before. He could take a 5 million dollar less buyout if he knows he is gonna get a deal for say even 7 million on the open market. If they stretched him then he would count less than 5 million this year. I doubt he gives up that much but...still.

Another option is say the Wolves trade Teague to a team who sends back a guy they don't want with 1 year left making let's say 7 million. They could stretch that guy or maybe trade that guy to someone who would take them on for a low cost of a 2nd rounder. They could even stretch Dieng although obviously doubtful they would want to do that. Good grief I need to go to bed I am starting to believe this Russell thing is sort of possible. lol

I was thinking of the Wiggins deal with Miami as a stand alone. I don't see a realistic scenario in which we clear space for Russell by dealing Wiggins. I don't see any of the teams with the necessary cap space being willing to take on Wiggins' remaining 4 years. Since it looks like Rosas doesn't want to part with Covington, I don't see any path for the Wolves to get Russell that doesn't include parting with both Teague and Gorgui. I'm pretty sure we'd have to give up at least one future lottery-protected first round pick to get any team to take those two players in a deal that leads to Russell.

I don't like stretching contracts. You end up with dead money against your cap and it often comes back to bite you. As an example, if it weren't for the stretch for Luol Deng on Lakers' books, they would be able to afford one of the elite veteran free agents.

I really don't like stretching contracts either. However...the Wiggins deal for Whiteside and a stretch saves you money this year which allows you to get get Russell by moving Teague and then the difference between Wiggins and Whiteside's stretch money the next 3 years is what line 20 million? That's still a substantial savings and why if someone is done with Wiggins and wanting Russell it would be worth it IMO. What bothers me about stretching contracts is when you do it with something in mind and then...basically nothing happens. Moly stretched Kevin Martin for some reason to have a bit more space the next year. It turned out they would have been better off just taking the full hit. Stretching to me makes sense if you actually get something you want that's valueable in the process. I'm not advocation for this deal so much as saying it's an avenue that's worth considering especially if you are done with Wiggins which neither of us are but others here are. Is it July yet? Lol
