Covington - Are You Concerned?
Is anyone concerned about Covington's knee beyond this season? I know I am. I'm not in the medical field, but the fact that he's been out this long with what's been termed a "bone bruise" makes me worry. I'm not suggesting it's not a bone bruise. I'm simply concern that, whatever it is, he's not healing and that it may be the sign of something deeper. It would be in line with the bad luck of this organization to find out that the most important player we received for Jimmy Butler, RoCo, has some permanent debilitating condition that seriously impedes his play, requires major surgery before next season or ends his career prematurely. Of course I'm speculating wildly here, but I've been a Wolves fan too long not to expect the worst. There's just something odd about how long RoCo has been out and the shroud of silence from the Wolves organization about his condition.

I think they were playing the long game and trying to show him that they care about his long term health above all so they were extra cautious. But I hear you on the luck issue, it's easy to expect the worst as a Wolves fan.

Are the Wolves truly that unlucky? Or just inept?
Consider they have two highly coveted #1 picks on the roster... and they combined to play 644 of 648 games to start their careers. That's amazingly fortunate from a health perspective... when many many other organizations have had to endure a host of injuries to top players, many knocking out players for the year.
With two #1 picks out there virtually every night... I don't know if we can chalk multiple 47+ loss seasons up to bad luck.

My feeling is that it has been precautionary and soft tanking as well. I think that had the Wolves been in say the 8th position right now he probably could come back. Again, I am purely speculating, maybe too optimistic. IDK.
They say bone bruises can take a long time to heal, so why not just let him heal fully 100% and not risk it. The guy knows how to play, it does little to get him back out there now. Let the young guys get some run like KBD and Cam, see if they can improve.

Jon K broke this down 2 different times on his podcast. There are mutliple layers to a bone. When there is a break through all of them its a fracture or worse obviously a break. If there is something that isn't all of those its called a bone bruise. He had a setback and unless someone is lying and Jon K says he has no info that suggests this is anything other than just the bone bruise he should be fine next year. SHould we have worries about Covington's long term health and availability? Sure. He has missed more than a couple games before. Its all the more reason to keep adding wings both to possibly reduce Covington's workload and as possible options in case he isn't available...or in scenario Covington is moved in a deal. Overall does this bone bruise putting him out for all these games make me a bit more worried? Yes it does. It adds a bit more concern but it doesn't freak me out or anything. The thing about Covington is he brings the 2 most important things this team needs defense and volume 3 point shooting. Can you imagine the difference he would make right now if he was healthy? Town passing to Covington or passing to someone who rotates ball to Covington instead of Okogie or really any Wolves wing? Covington defending someone and his elite team defense to cover for guys? Its a HUGE deal to have him back next year.

It is a big deal to have a healthy RoCo in the lineup. I think what is so disappointing is that the KAT/Wiggins duo has been unable to anchor an even average defense unless there is a stud defensive vet or two in the lineup (KG and Prince a couple years ago; Butler last year; RoCo now).
We fall apart like a house of cards when these two are left on their own with whatever other piece parts are included with them.

Am I concerned? I guess that depends. Am I concerned that he won't be able to play, causing us to be a slightly more mediocre team? The answer is no, i don't care whether we win 35 games or 40. We are in the exact spot I told you we would be the night Butler was traded here. Our ceiling was capped as a non-contender that evening, and whether we win 25, 30, 40, or 48 games, it doesn't really matter. Until the culture can be changed and we finally handle a rebuild properly, nothing really matters.

Does that mean people should stop bashing Wiggins? Asking for a friend.

I don't see the connection. Answering for myself.

Timberwolves: Minnesota announced that forward Robert Covington underwent successful arthroscopic surgery Monday. The procedure removed loose bodies in Covington's right knee.
I knew there was something more going on than a deep bone bruise. But the good news is that something was done about it and it was only the arthroscopic removal of loose bodies.
