Cloud 9

Post by thedoper »

We would muse here a lot about a Butler trade and I never really thought it was possible. But Thibs did it. We got our 3 and D guy who is an all-star and on a good contract for 3 years for an injured 2 who can't play D, an problematic PG prospect, and Markennen who most people were dreading as our pick. We still have cap space. Wigs is moving into his natural position as a 2. I am over the moon with this deal. If we were looked at as up and coming before free agents have got to be giving us serious consideration now. What a great night for our team. Go Wolves!!

Yeah, I'm feeling pretty good about tonight, too!

Ainge said in his press conference there were 5 or 6 guys they thought were pretty even, which is why they were comfortable trading down to 3. The Wolves, of course, had the 7th pick. I am glad we aren't sitting here with a 7th pick who is flawed.

And I just saw the NBA TV guys talk about Patton. They said he has the most upside of any big man in this draft. I am really excited what he could turn into (albeit not next year). Jim Petersen absolutely loves him, too.

Great night!

A few hours later I'll break down this trade how I see it.

Lavine for Butler

I love Lavine but just that deal alone unless you think younger super far away you have to do it.

Dunn

I've been defending this guy for weeks now and I was the one that didn't want him when we drafted him. I thought he could be a solid starter maybe special on defense. At this point he doesn't seem like a particularly significant prospect to me. Others still really believe in his talent. I believe he could be a decent starter. That's not a huge thing to give up especially when you look around at the PG position in the NBA.

7 for 16

Ok so the reality is there are probably only a couple guys Inwould have for sure wanted besides a guy like Patton. Zach collins and Justin Jackson. Jackson maybe doesn't exactly make sense because he is a young wing that can shoot but would be behind Butler and Wiggins. He projects to be a solid starter if he turns out. I'm not crying that we didn't get him because we moved down to #16. Collins is mostly a board favorite here. There were reports the Blazers wanted him and that turned out to be right. He wasn't going lower than 10. I like Collins a lot more than Patton but Patton give you a lot of what makes people like Collins actually.

So the Wolves gave up a young promising player that is a year away from getting paid a bunch of money for an all defensive all NBA top 20 player in Butler on a good 2 year contract. Awesome deal.

Dunn may be a decent rotation guy. The Wolves have 2 young PGs still on their roster in Rubio and Dunn and can sign a vet or even a young vet PG. So possibly not a big asset. It opens a roster spot to get another player probably a more vet PG which may also allow for the Wolves to add a younger guy somewhere else. It may also mean Tyus has a place here instead of just being a guy.

Wolves could have picked Collins over Patton. There is at least a tier difference to me but Patton has legit upside too. They might not be so far apart as some may think I'd give the edge to Collins but Patton is no slouch.

So really...as much as I like building this young team and how much I like assets etc...and I really love Lavine the player and what I know of the guy. Sigh, it's probably a pretty good deal assuming Butler stays healthy. That's the one thing that is a bit worrisome. It would be nice if Thibs would scale back a bit on the minutes. Keep in mind though our assistant trainer was voted the best!!!! lol

Doper, your analysis is concise and right on the money...exactly how I feel, although I would also add some excitement about the upside of General Patton.

As fans who love our Wolves, we tend to overvalue our own players...and especially a guy as lovable as Zach and a guy who plays as gritty as Dunn. But the numbers don't lie, and neither of them were helping us enough when they were on the court. And it's clear that the national media doesn't value them nearly as much as we do. Beyond that, I think Markkanen is going to be underwhelming. We gave up very little to get one of the top 5 2-way players in the league, plus a 7-foot athlete with upside. Home. Run.

I hear you Doper. Butler is the exact kind of player we needed on this team - a tough minded 2-way wing that hopefully can be the locker room leader and put some defensive dog into guys like Wiggins and KAT. He has the credibility to get in their ear if they are turn-styles.

By the same token, I have to believe he is looking forward to a little help himself with a couple of offensive weapons he hasn't had the luxury to play with since Derrick Rose was in MVP form.

When the lottery chatter started a few months ago, I wanted nothing to do with putting our hopes and dreams into yet another 19-year old lottery pick. We got our vet, yet still landed a young prospect that can be developed properly and not forced into the rotation right away. Just a perfect outcome.
