Rose? Okogie? KDB? No thanks.
This has to be in fore front of Thibs mind when rounding out this roster. This is where Corey Brewer might have shoe in.
I agree, Matt. It has to be Beasley or Brewer. Unfortunately, neither one is good on both sides of the ball. Beasley provides scoring while Brewer provides defense, although I think Brewer's defense is a bit overrated. He gets steals by generating turnovers, but Flip told me he's not a very reliable defender. Corey was 318th last season in advanced defensive metrics. Beasley was 420th. We don't have great choices right now, so I think it has to be one of these two. I'd go with Beasley because I think Okogie and KDB can provide defense off the bench this season while no one on our bench currently can provide any offensive firepower at the wing position.
With some of those advanced metrics*...you really start to wonder if the young guys will be much worse than those seasoned vets. People say that Thibs won't play young guys but that's not always true. The issue to me is that he might not play them enough. I think these rookies are gonna get on the floor some regularly unless they really suck. It's not like either Brewer or Beas really provide much more spacing than a bad shooting rookie.
*Those metrics aren't kind to Derrick Rose either. This will be the first time he will be playing in the role he maybe should have been playing for the last couple years. Bench SG. The bar is pretty low for him though. Play 60 games and suck less than Crawford. Lol
Lol. "Play 60 games and suck less than Crawford." The new standard for Derrick Rose. I like that, Monster. :)
I'm glad you liked that. I think I sorta think about Rose the way I did with Pek when I thought he could stay relatively healthy 50-60 games of pretty good production. Very different players and salaries but both guys at one time were very productive guys and if you get some that for most of the games they can play great.
Just looking through some of the other guys that are available and here are some other options not mentioned yet.
Nigel Hayes
Looks like he slimmed down and really shot the 3 well in the G league. Still has that crafty post game but it probably won't be used much. I'm skeptical of the 3 point shooting but it's interesting. He fits the modern NBA as a stretch 4 and probably could give you some minutes as a bench 3. I'd probably lean more towards a 2-way contract than an NBA one. Ive always thought he was a guy with the basic skillset to be a pretty solid backup 4 in the league. Being able to hit 3's is what matters and he didn't do that the last year in college.
Rashad Vaughn
Turns 22 next month. Watching some video of both NBA games and SL to me the reason you sign this guy is 3 point shooting and youth. He doesn't have much burst isn't very big and Isn't strong. He has some craft to his ball handling but it's far from outstanding. He seems like the type of flyer for a cheap price as Ben McLemore with less cost and less likely to be good. In articles I read basketball folks said he just needs to play. He probably needs to get I tot he G-League and see what he can do. Personally except Vaughn should be a better shooter I think MGH is a better talent right now. MGH has a better handle and has the strength to make up for not having the rest of the physical gifts. He clearly looks like a better defensive player. Maybe a year in the G-league and Vaughn can find more of his game. I thought he was a good guy to take a gamble on later in the draft but so far I've been wrong on him.
James Young. Turns 23 in a few weeks. Took a bunch of 3's in the G-league. He seems like another guy that has theoretical talent but hasn't figured it out. Watching some highlights he kinda reminds me of what Bazz would look like if he was ballin in the G-league. Young is likely a better shooter and passer but he seems a bit heavy footed at times and takes a lot of contested shots.
One of the players the Clippers let go at some point like CJ Williams Ty Wallace RFA or even Wes Johnson (don't laugh his defensive stats were pretty good last year). None of those guys are very exciting but let's be honest nobody I'm mentioning here is.
I'm being a homer to some extent but honestly I don't see any of these guys that are significantly better than MGH overall. I'm gonna guess that the Wolves are looking for better players than all these guys including MGH and they should and should have done so when they didn't give either MGH or Amile a qualifying offer. They can save themselves a few bucks by doing so and if they have to signs guys of that ilk and MGH and Amile aren't options they can sign similar talent players that project as better shooters. It sounds like the Wolves have some interest in both guys.
If you want to add a defensive center type Eric Moreland and Lucas Nogueira are guys with some pretty good defensive advanced stats. I don't really think we need one of these guys but yeah.
Also before you say these last roster spots don't matter...3 of the top 20 guys last year in terms of makes and takes from 3 per 48 mins were former Wolves and they were guys that were far from top flight FAs once upon a time.
EDIT: Make that 4 former Wolves players when you include the guy that played half the season.
Why not OJ Mayo. If he has his life together he is coming off a 2 year suspension for drug use. (I believe weed). He is a career 37% 3pt shooter on 4 attempts per game.
Talent wise probably the best talent available but who knows after 2 years away and is his head on straight

Interesting, Monster. Just curious, who were they?

That's a worthwhile name to bring up. If he has his life together yes it's certainly worth exploring. What I have heard read it was cocaine which is more problematic. I believe he has to be reinstated by the league before he can play. I've heard he is back in shape ready to play. He wasn't particular effective as an offensive player those last couple seasons but I think he was actually solid defensively.
