Yes. He's a veteran. Has Thibs experience. Can defend. Knows his lane. Tough. Et al.
But he's not a game-changer... and should be paid accordingly.
Agreed. That's why he's my Plan C. If you are on Plan C, you aren't exactly getting big time needle movers.
Question for you: Who would you rather start next to KAT - Dieng or Gibson? You also have to factor in Dieng's relative effectiveness as a backup Center versus a starter. Neither plays big minutes currently by the way.
Q -- Thibs LOVES Gorgui. And with good reason if you watch Gorgui live game after game. And Gorgui still has untapped upside. Thibs is NOT going to replace Gorgui in the starting lineup unless he gets a bona fide shot-blocker/strong defensive presence or a top line player like Millsap. Gibson is neither of those things. Gibson would be a decent acquisition as part of our PF/C rotation. But I'll be sadly disappointed if we end up with Gibson as our major off-season acquisition.

Lip, My view is that KAT needs to start guarding Centers and we need a PF that can guard out in space as teams continue to play 4's that are more likely to hang out beyond the arc than battle inside. Gibson is better guarding in space that either Dieng or KAT.
The other thing this move does is help our bench, because now Dieng can backup KAT and perhaps give him more than 10 minutes of rest per game. So Dieng would still be an important part of the rotation. Bjelly would backup Gibson and probably finish most games based on how he was playing before his injury.
Now let me be clear. This is far from my ideal summer. I'd much rather us catch a bigger fish than Gibson. But if we had to go to Plan C (and since we're the Wolves, that's just how we roll), then this would be my logic with Gibson.

Q -- I agree that the acquisition would definitely help our bench regardless of whether Gorgui or Gibson ended up coming off the bench. Looking at Gorgui's overall game on both sides fo the ball compared to Gibson's and considering their age/trajectory, I'm not sure I agree that Gibson is the better of the two 30+ minutes per game, although I agree Gibson is the better defender in space. And I think a lot of people on this Board grossly undervalue Gorgui's game and positive impact on the floor. But my main point is that I dont' think Thibs would start Gibson ahead of Gorgui because Thibs has a very high opinion of Gorgui's all-around game.
The more playoff games I watch the more I'm convinced that you're right about the need to make a huge push for Millsap. This team really needs to make and play well in the playoffs next season. Adding Millsap to our current roster would be the push we need to make that happen. I still doubt he'd sign here, but stranger things have happened. I think we can agree that Millsap would start over Gorgui. :)

Basketball insiders has the best salary and cap numbers IMO. It doesn't sound like the Wolves are gonna renounce Bazz but you can see what the number would be except you will have to do a little of your own math to take out Pek's salary.

Looks like we're at around $75 million in guaranteed salary for 10 players next season with Pek's 11.6 million salary as one of the ten players, but without cap holds for Bazz or our first round pick. Oddly, our payroll against the cap still includes a stretch payment of around $1.3 million to Kevin Martin.
I'm guessing we'll have a first round cap hold of around $5 million and a cap hold for Bazz of around $4 million. That would put us at around $84 million in salary obligations against the cap. Assuming Pek remains on the payroll and assuming the expected $102 million cap, we'd have around $18 million in cap space. Clearing Pek's $11.6 million would give us nearly $30 million.
It would seem we'd need to clear Pek's salary from the books to have any shot at a major FA signing like Millsap this summer. I don't think Bazz's cap hold will matter much. Does anyone know the status of Pek's contract?

There isn't any news on Pek's contract but it seems like it's a forgone conclusion it will be off the books. At some point they will have some low key press release or something is my guess.
The Cap holds according to BBinsiders for Wolves FAs totals just over 16 million which includes 7.5 million for Bazz 4 milllion for Rush 3 million for Payne and 1.5 for Casspi.
I was never a fan of stretching Martin but it probably won't matter that much but we have that 1.3 million coming the next 2 years on the cap.
I guess the part I'm murky on is Gorgui's contract and how that impacts our cap, as this article implies that we can spend up to $40M even with Gorgui's contract on the books. Worst-case scenario seems to be $25M if you factor in Gorgui's deal.
As for Pek, we can stretch his remaining contract over the next three seasons and free up $.

Milsap or bust!
Q the reports are that the Wolves can and likely have applied for medical retirement for Pek and that means none of his remaining salary will count against the cap next season. There was likely no hurry to announce this and they didn't need the salary relief this season because they didn't even hit the salary floor. Keeping Pek's contract on the books this year in a way sorta saves them money because they would have had to pay up to the floor anyway.
As for the salaries for this year click on the link below and peruse to your heart's desire. If you want to see the cap holds they are the last item at the end of the page.
The key is clearing Pek off the books. If so, the Wolves have control over all the cap holds except the 1st round pick, which I didn't see reflected in the insiders site. So I think we can count on at least $25 million in cap space if Pek is off the books. That's enough to sign Millsap, but it leaves us much room to do anything else. And I just don't see Millsap or any comparable FA signing here this summer.
Bottom line is that the success of this franchise is in the hands of our inner core three (KAT, Wiggins and Zach) along with our outer core three, Ricky, Gorgui and Dunn, and our head coach. We need (1) our inner core to improve significantly on the defensive end, (2) our outer core to improve in certain respects (Ricky improving his 3-point shot, Gorgui continuing to get stronger, Dunn improving his ball-handling and shooting), and (3) our head coach to get our players to at least get the most out of their talents and hopefully overachieve -- which is what the top head coaches do and what Glen Taylor must have expected From Thibs when he signed him to such a lucrative long-term deal.
