Free agent shooters

Post by Monster »

Ok obviously this team basically has 2 needs. At least 1 more competent big and at this point shooting is a pretty big need. It feels like this FA class isn't exactly stocked with high end/starting level shooters.

Here are some of my thoughts.

Deng would help with basically everything including shooting I think most people here would like to see him come here.

If we don't get Deng or someone that level of impact I like Jared Dudley who is a much lesser version of Deng but can do a little of everything well enough. It would seem he wouldn't break the bank either. Budinger is available and may come very cheap after struggling last year shooting the 3.

Maybe you can add some shooting from some decent big guys like Teletovic or even an Anthony Tolliver or even Jon Leuer. Obviously Ryan Anderson is the top guy but supposedly he will be in huge demand and that makes sense.

One guy that would be a nice cheap player I've always liked is Quincey Acy. He is a tough combo forward that had a pretty good year for the Kings last year including shooting over 38% from 3. That surprised the heck out of me I did not think he had that in him.

Jared Dudley, Courtney Lee, Brandon Rush, and Dorell Wright intrigue me as shooters.

I like Quincy Acy as a big. I also like Trevor Booker.

Brightside provided my list of 3-point shooting FAs we should pursue. Pehaps Steve Novak as well. He'd be very cheap. Afflalo would bring defense and pretty good 3-point shooting at SG.

The more I think about it, the more I wish we had drafted Buddy. Adding his 3-point shooting prowess on a rookie scale contract would have been the perfect fit for this team. It would have also given us more leeway in selecting from among the available FAs without absolutely having to sign a top notch 3-point shooter. And we wouldn't have had to ensure the nauseating Ricky/Dunn debate. :).

None of the 3 point shooters make me salivate, not even Ryan Anderson given the salary he's likely to command, so I'll trust the FO (aka our coach) to find an Eddie House for our team.

Deng intrigues me as a forward (specifically PF), as long as it wasn't a detrimental deal in length.

Hockey- Deng at PF intrigues me too depending on the contract. But my #1 target would be Dudley. He's the best three-point shooter among the unrestricted FAs and he has good length allowing him to play SG or SF. As I've mentioned before, my priority big guy FA target would be Cole Adrich. These are two guys who I think we could get at a reasonable price, giving us quality depth without creating any present or future cap issues. With three roster spots available (assuming KG doesn't retire), I'd fill the third slot with the best D-League or undrafted college player I can find at any position. We'll have to hope that Belly becomes the player we all hoped he'd be.

I'll add Coty Clarke as a guy that would add shooting.

Would anyone else want to consider signing Jordan Hamilton or James Ennis to our bench shooter? Both got some minutes late last season when half of the New Orleans roster was injured. I'm afraid that at least Dudley will be too expensive.

I know that Mo Harkless is not at least yet shooter, but I would like to sign him if Deng will be too expensive. Maybe he would be able to follow same path than Aminu and Carroll earlier and learn to shoot three pointers in little older age.

1. I think guys like Steve Novak are being marginalized out of the league at the moment. He was only in the league because he could shoot three pointers when opposing bigs couldn't get out to guard him. Now that teams are switching more and more and more and daring guys like Novak to post up much smaller defenders... (see Channing Frye and even Kevin Love in the NBA Finals)... third-rate guys like Novak who can't play a lick of defense are finding court time even more difficult to get.

2. Afflalo was such a fun guy in Denver. He seemed to thrive on doing the little things and being a bit underrated. From what I've read, he still imagines himself a top-notch SG. He's not... and he's been exposed a bit in recent years. I don't think he'll be worth what he demands this summer.

3. Back to point #1... I wonder if that is part of the reason Thibodeau is so hot on Butler's tail. Because if Wiggins improves defensively like so many of us expect with that athleticism of his... the Wolves would have two fairly tall wings capable of being interchangeable defensively. Even with Towns and Rubio/Dunn, you'd be able to do a bunch of switching defensively without being woefully exposed.

Agreed Lip, Buddy would have been the better pick, but Dunn, Belly, and Bazz should be able to provide solid back up numbers this year (+added FA). Is Gary Neal available?
