Re: Is there a future here for Pek
Flip could let GR3 play in the D league for a year and sign him next year. The Pelicans did the same thing with Pierre Jackson. Nobody could just swoop in and sign him because we have his rights. Right now we have 5 PG's on the roster (Rubio, Williams, Lavine, Shved, JJ). I think 2 have to go in some capacity. We have 6 guys that can play some 2 (Martin, Lavine, Bud, Brewer, Wiggins and possibly Williams in some stints). I think we have plenty of guards and wings, but we severely lack bigs. Especially competent 4's.

Explain how that works, khans. I thought even if the player was in the DL that the NBA team had to hold a roster spot for him or something like that.

Re: Is there a future here for Pek
From CBA FAQ:
oIf the player is already under contract to, or signs a contract with a non-NBA team, the team retains the player's draft rights for one year after the player's obligation to the non-NBA team ends. Essentially, the clock stops as long as the player plays pro ball outside the NBA. Players are not included in team salary during the regular season while the player is under contract with a non-NBA team.
oIf the player goes on to play college ball after he was drafted, then the team retains the player's draft rights until one year following the draft the player would have entered had he not declared early. For example, if a team drafts a college sophomore in 2012 and he returns to college and plays intercollegiate basketball, then they retain his draft rights until the 2015 draft. Note that the NCAA rules state that players lose their NCAA eligibility if they are drafted, so the player currently cannot return or go on to play college ball. This rule exists in the CBA in the event the NCAA rules ever change.
oIf the player was eligible to play in college before he was drafted but does not go on to play college basketball, then the team retains the player's draft rights until the draft the player would have entered had he not declared early. For example, if a team drafts a college sophomore in 2012 and he does not return to college and play intercollegiate basketball, they retain his draft rights until the 2014 draft.
oFor all other players, the team retains the player's draft rights until the date of the next draft.
I think he fits under the 3rd bullet point, but at the very least we have him for a year according to the 4th bullet point.

GR3 HAS to be on the roster or signed in europe for us to keep his rights. You can't keep a guy's rights while they play in the D-League. This is a common mistake by fans and writers. If we could do that we would have done it with Lorenzo Brown last year but he didn't make the roster and got picked up by the Sixers for a while.
Like you said there are lots of guys that could play SG and I'll add GR3 to your list. If he can't play SG at some point of his career he is in trouble. His length isn't that amazing for a SF which is partly why he dropped.
A question I keep asking myself is where does GR3 fit? IDK I'd like to keep him around but adding Wiggins makes me less excited about GR3 and I REALLY wanted him in this draft in the 2nd round.

Why did nobody pick up Pierre Jackson when he was dropping 35 a game in the D-League? I read somewhere that nobody could because the Pelicans had his rights.
Re: Is there a future here for Pek
Monster - I didn't go verify this, but I believe the NBA treats the NBDL just like Europe for players that do not sign with the team that holds their rights. NBDL teams are considered Pro teams.
Now there is also this other thing where NBA teams can have an affiliation with an NBDL team (or own one) - they can send one of their roster players who qualifies (like Shabazz last year) to that NBDL team.
The former option is currently available for GR3, although it is completely at his discretion where he goes and plays. If the Wolves sign GR3, then the latter option is available. But do the Wolves even have an affiliation to an NBDL team any more?!?

Re: Is there a future here for Pek
If it makes you sleep better at night research it out but the ONLY way an NBA team can keep any player's rights that plays in the D-League they HAVE to be on the 15 man roster. Flip explained this on funkadelic after the draft so that's a really reliable source. Like I said before MANY smart basketball people have this confused because well it doesn't make sense when you are used to other major sports having minor league systems. D-league players not on your 15 man roster are free agents they are even less yours than guys on an NFL team's practice squad. In a couple years when every team have their own di"eague team this will change or maybe even before. Like I said I want minor league basketball so bad. Hopefully there ends up being a team closer to me than the Iowa Energy.
Back to your Point Tim about ball handling guards. I do think that's a legit concern and its not something to be dismissed. I also think the Wolves have no true PF right now.
I still wonder if Flip has some sort of minor move basically lined up like trading Bud for a similar possible impact player with questions. Ersan would make sense except why resign Hummel. Let's see how things shake out.
Remember it was obvious I think last year Flip really Liked Lorenzo Brown and he ended up not making the team because Price beat him out. I think Flip has higher regard for GR3 so let's see what happens.

This was my thinking as well. Glad I wasn't off with my understanding of the rule. I started to question myself. Lol

Also to clear things up about Pierre Jackson (who is an interesting story props to the Sixers for signing an injured guy) he signed 2 separate overseas deals last year which likely why the Pelicans had his rights to trade back to the Sixers.

My question is how can we move Barea, Shved, Budinger etc etc to make this roster filled out? Who are we going to have to sacrifice and...can we keep guys like Pek, Martin, Brewer to do so? Because IMO, Williams, Martin, Brewer, Pek and Turiaf are all very important assets and very important at there contract levels.
Where have you been, Slim?
While not as clear as the Love trade, the common thinking is Barea, Luc and the 1st round pick from the Love trade will go to Philly in exchange for Young, who will be our starting PF. I'm still doubtful GR3 will be signed this year, unless Shabazz is traded...
Good Question Tim! ha haha....I have been like a cat, observing from a distance surveying the terrain from a safe spot. BEen missing you dudes.
Too many crazy things going on and being a Wolves fan has me spinning in circles....but I must say, I am intrigued. And the last thing I would have ever said is "We may have too much depth and not enough superior, logical starting talent"
This is a Pek topic point, and I want to try to stay on point. I must say this, by living in Portland now for 7 years, the dynamic of the league, especially the West is changing quickly. I believe losing Love in this trade may end up being the best thing to happen to the Wolves in over a decade. Pek will be a huge factor for us, and losing him would be catestrophic. Portland hit it rich with Lillard, and I feel Wiggings can be our Lillard type talent going forward. That is just my thoughts. Especially as well as Dieng was last year, as we all know it takes time for Centers to develop and gain the weight, strength and IQ needed to compete. He will be a stud.
Do we actually think we can trade Barea, LRM and filler for Young? Lastly, I agree Tim, we have a log jam at SF, and GR3 is talented, but Shabazz needed to either play or be in the D league most the season, and I believe either we need to move Bud and free up more space or Robinson is a casualty of too plump of a roster. Hate to see that!
Lastly, as much as I like GR3....does anyone seriously believe that he will become a solid if not better NBA talent. I know most of us want him aboard, but I think the days are over and need to be over in regards to Quantity over Quality. We have a roster nearly filled with mid level talent....Its time to address this seriously and secure a bench, but also go after as best we can with a new image and a new face of the future in Wiggins. Hoping it draws talent and established players. TBD
