Jaden’s extension “not close”
Jaden’s extension “not close”
Not sure if this has been posted yet, but Doogie is reporting that the negotiations on Jaden’s extension is “not close.” Maybe no need for alarm, since there’s no real deadline until after next season. But I’ve sort of been expecting something soon after the announcement of Ant’s extension… so, a little disappointing.
Re: Jaden’s extension “not close”
I’m not alarmed, but definitely a bit concerned. The Desmond Bane max contract will make this even more difficult. Jaden was picked ahead of Bane and I’m sure that’s part of the narrative the Wolves are hearing from Jaden’s agent.
I’m still confident the Wolves will re-sign Jaden, but it will be interesting to see how close to the max his deal will be. That’s the issue. I can’t see the Wolves not re-signing Jaden. But re-signing him will likely mean paying him an amount very close to the max. I recall a couple weeks ago getting a lot of pushback on this board from some when I suggested Jaden would end up with a contract that starts at $30M. With the max starting salary for 2024-25 at $37.4M, I think the Wolves will be fortunate to keep him for as little as $30M for that season.
The only reason the Wolves might decline to re-sign Jaden in my view is if they’re committed to keeping both KAT and Rudy beyond next season. If Jaden’s salary in the 2024-25 season is $30M then the high likelihood of exceeding the second apron with both Rudy and KAT on the books becomes a certainty. I don’t see the Wolves front office so committed to the Rudy-KAT pairing that they’ll allow it to jeopardize keeping Jaden. So the fact that the Wolves and Jaden aren’t close to getting a deal done is nothing to worry about for those of us who want the Wolves to re-sign Jaden. They’ll re-sign him. The fans who should worry are those who still cling to the notion this team can move forward with both KAT and Rudy after next season.

Chris Haynes: All-Star guard Dejounte Murray with CEO of @KlutchSports Rich Paul and Atlanta Hawks have reached an agreement on a four-year, $120 million extension, league sources tell @NBAonTNT, @BleacherReport. pic.twitter.com/jfQdUX2goL – via Twitter ChrisBHaynes
That’s an average of $30M per year. I’d like to believe the Wolves could sign Jaden to a five-year deal at and average of $30M per year. That would be a $150 million contract. But I don’t think Jaden will settle for that after Desmond Bane just got a five-year $207 million max contract. Maybe the Wolves can get away with a five year $180M contract for Jaden. That would be an average of $36M per year.

Are teams still limited in only giving out 5 year deals to just 2 players?Lipoli390 wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 7:31 pm Chris Haynes: All-Star guard Dejounte Murray with CEO of @KlutchSports Rich Paul and Atlanta Hawks have reached an agreement on a four-year, $120 million extension, league sources tell @NBAonTNT, @BleacherReport. pic.twitter.com/jfQdUX2goL – via Twitter ChrisBHaynes

I’m not surprised they aren’t close.
Murray is about to turn 27 in September. My guess is he and maybe his representatives figured they might be wise to take a deal now that takes him into his early 30’s than wait. Murry for 30 million a year average sounds good now and if he continues to pay well it could be an excellent value with the rising cap. The Hawks have him locked in for 5 total years now. I just read the base contract is actually 111 million $120 is with incentives. Murray must have wanted to make a deal now for one reason or another. That’s a nice deal for the Hawks. The Spurs probably still made the right decision but I wonder if they would have made the deal if they could have resigned him for that contract. My guess is they didn’t think he was gonna take a deal like that for them.
So will McDaniels take a nice deal or will he bet on himself and go to RFA next year? I think there is a chance if he does that he could end up with a heck of an offer from some team or even the Wolves. What number will the Wolves be willing to offer him to make him pass up that chance? Idk it’s also worth remembering that this year’s cap went up a bit more than expected so the overall value of any contract is a little more than what we were expecting. Unless something really changes McDaniels is going to be resigned…the question is for how much and when will he sign.
Re: Jaden’s extension “not close”
I don’t believe teams are still limited to only two 5-year deals.
I agree the Wolves will re-sign Jaden. But I don’t see Jaden ending up in free agency. So the issue of when is only weeks, not months. That means the only significant issue is how much. It will be less than max but not a lot less.

“Here's a far more inclusive change: all rookie-scale extensions can now last five years.”
Re: Jaden’s extension “not close”
Sorry to play devils advocate but......
As much as I like Jaden and love his potential, is he currently really worth north of 30 mil a season?
I'm sorry but he isn't worth Desmond Bane money (who IMO has been massively overpaid) or even Dejounte Murray money, based on the production we are getting out of him at the moment.
I understand why TC and the Front Office are wanting to wait as its a hell of a gamble. Wait and see how he develops and improves this season before committing to the kind of contract his agent is likely seeking. If he shows the consistent improvement we've seen over the first three season then sure he's probably worth 100 mil over 4 years. Even better he takes the 'leap' we are all hoping for and we can justify paying him 120 mil (plus) over 4 years. But at the moment I'm not sure that's a good business decision from the Wolves front office, especially with the current cap situation heading into next 2024/25.
At least with ANT we can see he is already a super star who is only going to get better. There is not that level of certainty with Jaden.
Time is up our sleeves fortunately.

Re: Jaden’s extension “not close”
I’m with you 100%. I love Jaden as much as the next guy but if we are talking max money for Jaden we need to seriously talk about trading Jaden. You mention Bane as a borderline max guy and I agree and I love Bane. Bane averaged 9 more pts, 1 more rebound (at a less important rebounding position), 2.5 more assists while being a better shooter on higher volume than Mcdaniels.KiwiMatt wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 9:32 pm Sorry to play devils advocate but......

At the end of the day Mcdaniels is a 12/4/2 guy on limited volume with elite defense. There is 0 reason to give Mcdaniels over 25 million a year this offseason. This offseason the floor was set for money by Herb Jones at 14 million a year for 4 years. I’m comfortable giving Mcdaniels low 20 million this offseason just to lock him up but Mcdaniels needs to show me a ton more on the offensive end to even consider 25+ million let alone the max. If Mcdaniels wants max money the wolves should be calling Portland for a Mcdaniels and Conley swap for lillard. I love mcdaniels but he needs to show a ton more for me to give him that type of money
Re: Jaden’s extension “not close”
I think you’re both probably right about what the Wolves should do. But I also think the Wolves are going to sign Jaden to a contract that’s north of $120 million over 4 years. If I had to guess, I’d say he’ll get a contract of at least $160 million over 5 years with a player option on the 5th year. That’s an average of $32 million per year - slightly more than DeJounte Murray just got. One thing we’ve seen is that TC bets on himself. He believed in Rudy and paid a ridiculous king’s random to get him last summer. He believes in Naz and didn’t take any risk of letting Naz end up in free agency. He clearly believes in Jaden to the point of rejecting trade proposals around the League. He referred to Ant and Jaden as “joined a the hip.” All that tells me TC will sign Jaden to a contract based on his vision of what he believes Jaden will become, which will be an amount that substantially exceeds what he’s earned through his production.kekgeek wrote: ↑Thu Jul 06, 2023 11:26 pmI’m with you 100%.
