Last roster spot
Re: Last roster spot
Cam Payne is available. Anyone think we should sign him to our fifteenth roster spot?
Re: Last roster spot
I’d be in on that. I think one of the questions is whether or not he will get offers higher than the vet min and will he look for a team with a legit role and or on team he feels is more of a contender? Will he wait out signing somewhere since he has already gotten paid for this season?
Re: Last roster spot
That wouldn’t be a bad move. But I’m convinced the Wolves are going to leave that roster spot open going into the season to maintain roster and trade flexibility for use later in the season. That seems like the right approach to me unless a “player you can’t refuse” becomes available. My preference would be signing a talented young PG to our third two-way contract. I would have liked to se the Wolves sign Ty Ty. I’m not sure who else is out there right now.

Kennedy Chander (20), Theo Maledon (22, RF), Daishen Nix (21), Scottie Pippen Jr. (22), Michael Devoe (23) and Brandon Williams (23).
Re: Last roster spot
There is also various vet players too including Kendrick Nunn who is 28. What about Terrance Davis? There are older guys that might be handy if they wanted a guy that could maybe step in if there are injuries. Of course Lip makes the case they could keep the spot open for whatever they need.KG4Ever wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 7:51 pmFree agents that fit the young point guard or combo guard profile include:Lipoli390 wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 4:12 pmThat wouldn’t be a bad move. As for even younger guys Nowell is available which I’m not suggesting we should get but even with his season last year he is a guy with some legit talent. There are other guys like that that could be worth signing. Sometimes you find a guy that didn’t get it and then something clicks even as just a rotation guy.
I honestly don’t know what route they should take although I’d like to see them add a young cheap player to the roster to see if they get lucky in adding someone worth having around long term. If it was a rookie they might be cheap enough to have a guaranteed player who could be cut later and still have enough space to sing a vet min guy later. My guess is they can get someone like that on a non-guaranteed deal though.
Re: Last roster spot
I'm with Lip in wanting a young point guard to develop. My two favorites of the remaining unsigned players are Theo Maledon and Kennedy Chandler as they are more in the pass first playmaking point guard mold compared to some of the other young options and I think both offer some upside potential. KC is short (6 feet) and small (though his wingspan is listed at between 6"5 and 6"7) but he's very quick and has a nice vertical, he's also a pesky defender and ballhawk can pass well, but he has yet to find his shot in the NBA. Maledon has more size than KC (6"4) with a wingspan listed at 6"8/6"9.
Barring injury, the rotation is full and so I would prefer developmental player over a vet. I guess if we could upgrade JMac, I'd consider a vet to replace him, but ideally I'd wait to see how JMAC plays as he was fine before last season. If we did sign Cam Payne, JMAC would be on the chopping block. Both players are inconsistent with their shot. Cam Payne shot lights out three years ago, but he came back to earth since then. I also want to make sure we keep Garza as he seems to be improving and we might at some point need to sign him to a standard deal to keep from losing him.

Re: Last roster spot
Maledon can’t make 3’s. Other than that he has some solid do shit stuff going for him as well as legit SG or big combo guard length. He did shoot over 85% front he FT line last year so that’s a positive.KG4Ever wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 9:19 pm I'm with Lip in wanting a young point guard to develop. I think you bring up something interesting with Garza. At some point they may say that Garza simply is too good and deserving an actual NBA deal and they want to reward him for his hard work and development. At that point they would have a 2-way spot open up which would open up spots for a PG or some sort of perimeter player.
I’m not going to advocate very hard for him whatsoever partly because I haven’t seen him play for at least a year (watched some highlights just now) but RJ Hampton is a guy that’s always intrigued me in some way (the bar keeps being lowered) and I believe he would still be eligible for a 2-way deal. At this point he is more of a guy that’s at the fringe of the league and you are hoping he can be a rotation guy that you would be taking a flyer on. He was actually doing some good things statistically before he got cut by Orlando and shot the 3 better with Detroit. Connelly drafted him and then after a few months wisely moved him to acquire Aaron Gordon.
Having said that there are honestly probably 10 other guys with similar talent to Hampton. Even though he hasn’t figured it out yet sometimes it’s worth taking a flyer on a guy that’s at least played in the league. Sometimes it takes a while for it to come together. NAW MIGHT end up being an example of that.
Re: Last roster spot
KG4 - I agree with you on Garza. He really impressed me. If we end up trading KAT next summer, I like having both Garza and Naz on the roster.KG4Ever wrote: ↑Tue Sep 12, 2023 9:19 pm I'm with Lip in wanting a young point guard to develop. Re: Last roster spot
I agree on Garza. He seems like the type of big that can "eat innings" in the regular season, but then probably has to stay on the bench in a playoff series since he will be relentlessly hunted. But during the dog days of the season (December - February especially) when a lot of teams aren't at full strength and it's a lot of bench guys and G-league types playing rotation minutes, he's a guy that will absolutely destroy 2nd/3rd tier bigs.
Re: Last roster spot
The Timberwolves are signing Vit Krejci to a training camp deal, sources tell @TheAthletic. Krejci, a 6-8 G/F, played 29 games for the Atlanta Hawks last season.
