How about that Baker Mayfield guy who couldn't start at Texas Tech and went to Oklahoma? Sometimes NFL QB's are starting in front of you and there's not a ton you can do about it.
I knew that was coming, but it is a concern. Tom Brady couldn't keep a starting job in Michigan with a young recruit. Baker Mayfield has not gotten it done and honestly after seeing him play I don't see him having #1 overall pick upside.
Brad Johnson was a backup his whole career at Florida state. Yeah he started some games but he was just a placeholder ti the other guy got back. I forgot he also played basketball his first couple years too.
It's still a crapshoot too some extent. It's not like you should just throw up your hands and say I don't care or whatever but...it's still a crapshoot. Nothing epitomizes that more than the last year I played fantasy football and won the championship with Blake Bortles and Tyrod Taylor as my guys down the stretch. Lol
Jason does make a good point about Browning having an edge because he was here last year and who knows when this season is gonna start etc. It might not be a great year to take a swing at another developmental QB if they believe in Browning even as a future quality backup type.
Let's try to clear this up all at once:
Let's start with Tom Brady. That "young recruit" has a name. It's Drew Henson. And Drew Henson told anyone and everyone with a pair of ears that if he wasn't named starter before the season started, he was leaving to go play for the Yankees (Kind of like that time Elway said he if IND drafted him he was going to play.... for the Yankees. Evil Empire indeed.) And the entire Michigan Athletic Department was lockstep in that decision. In interviews since, Tom Brady has made it clear how pissed he was and how he went to the AD and said he wanted kicked off the team so he wouldn't have to sit a year. They said no way and only adults get to ignore their college contracts. He has also been candid about the fact that he saw a therapist for the rest of his time there (gotta love your parent's health insurance). Anybody who saw him play knew he had it. Maybe not 9-conference-championships-in-20-years-had-it, but had it. People who worked for the Browns at the time say they had him in their top 60, but thought the fans would revolt because he's a Wolverine. Now, could that be revisionist-history-butt-covering? Possibly. But if you ever met one of these Ohio "Brain Surgeons" who can name all 100 Buckeyes but can't name 5 Browns/Bengals/Reds/Indians/Cavs/Jackets, you'll see their point.
The Brad Johnson thing is trickier. Was he a good pro? Absolutely. But Casey Weldon had it too, good enough to be 2nd in the Heisman his senior year. Maybe if he doesn't play for Ray Rhodes and Rick Kotite it goes for better for him. Johnson had Billick then Gruden. Not my two favorite people, but they know their thing.
Khans, you doorstop of human being, are you paying attention. I realize you were in a mood yesterday because you remembered your junior high serves the rectangle pizza on Tuesdays and you missed it because of the virus, but let's review. This started by Monster saying the Vikes should look at Anthony Gordon. At which point I responded that maybe Browning is good, maybe hasn't really had a full shot, and maybe this isn't the year to start over with someone who may not be any kind of improvement, while also pointing out two of your "greatest hits". Pretty efficient. You responded by NAMING TWO HEISMEN TROPHY WINNERS AND NUMBER ONE PICKS. Great job. Way to put us in our place. Yes Kahns, the Vikings should waive Browning and Mannion immediately and sign Burrow and Mayfield. Good job by you.
You see, it's about SUSTAINED PRODUCTIVITY. It's not about that one time Aaron Afflalo scored 20, or the THREE good games Biyombo had, or that one year Gordon dressed for every game, or that one time Josh Freeman beat the Vikings in OT, or that one time the Wild beat the 'Lanche. It's about day after week after month after year after (hopefully) decade of getting it done. Kind of like you with the these message boards, but the exact opposite.
And not for nothing: Joe Burrow was passed over by Urban Meyer. And what is it about Urban Meyer's past that leads you to believe that was based on solid judgement?
