I really enjoyed Conley's and Finchie's comments about Jaden's D in the paper this morning. The Wolves have been focusing far more on defense than offense in the two practices this week, and Conley talked about the negative impact from "one small mistake from one guy". We Wolves fans have pulled our hair out a few times in the past couple years when we observed "one small mistake" leading to rotation disasters, and Conley's presence on the court will be invaluable in helping villains like Ant and Jaylen in that regard. But with respect to Jaden, both of them talked about how Conley's ability to guard very good PGs (something they couldn't always do with the previous PG) allows Jaden to be even more disruptive in low man positions. Jaden is so good on-ball, I think we'll still see him on Kyrie some tonight. But allowing him to sag off of someone like Josh Green (while Mike takes Kyrie and SloMo takes Luka) can make him really effective with his length...not to mention a better rebounder.

If Mcdaniels never improves and keeps the player he is now he will be probably 100 million dollar player. He is arguably the best day to day defender (Meaning Jaden brings it every night but I would still take some defenders to get a stop in a pressure situation over Mcdaniels) and his shooting has come around. Here are some shot frequancy and accruacy numbers from Jaden from cleaningtheglass.com

Frequency

Rim: 74th percentile
Short mid: 69th percentile
Long mid: 50th percentile
All mid: 63rd percentile
Corner 3: 69th percentile
Non corner 3: 19th percentile
All 3s: 34th percentile

Accuacy
eFG%: 85th percentile
Rim: 74th percentile
Short mid: 48th percentile
Long Mid: 91st percentile
All mid: 62nd percentile
Corner 3: 56th percentile
Non Corner 3: 65th percentile
All 3s: 69th percentile

With Jaden current volume he is at average to slightly above average on every spot on the floor when it comes to shooting in the NBA. Now Cam is right if the volume goes up will his efficency go down, that is a question I can't answer. By far Jaden biggest weakness is rebounding he only rebounds 7.1% of all shots missed by the opponent what is in the 5th percentile.

I just want to say again if Jaden never improves we are looking at a damn good player for years to come. Now if the volume increases on offense and the accruacy stays the same or goes up just a little bit we are looking at another max player on the Wolves. If this Rudy expierement fails I do think the Wolves have some solid pieces to recoup a shit ton of picks in Kat, Jaden, Ant and Conley contract or they do have 2 cornerstone players who are still in their early 20s in Ant and Jaden to continue to build around. Overall really happy with Jaden development so far and think he is just as important of a piece going as Ant is to the Wolves long term success.

Here's another reason to be optimistic about Jaden McDaniels at 22. According to this scattergram, he is currently the best on-ball defender in the league right now...nice to see our eye test backed up by data!

I like your last sentence. I've been thinking the same thing but wasn't quite ready to say it. I think you're right.

other than his rebounding, the worrisome aspect to McDaniels' fit or chances to succeed will come from any potential Towns trade. Any KAT trade is gonna lead to us wanting a promising wing back, and inevitably it's gonna lead Connelly to think either 2 things:

1. that he can more to small ball 4 (which would negate whatever he adds defensively)

or

2. that he can move to SG which means Edwards plays PG (which causes Ant and the rest of the team to take a hit)

Apparently we need to sign Jevon Carter.

That's a cool graph. Haliburton must be a pylon.

There's something really special going on here with Jaden. Not to mention the improvement we've seen in his offensive game,

Once he starts getting the proper respect from the officials he is going to be even better. I watch the way PJ Tucker is officiated compared to Jaden, it's amazing they're in the same league. I have to believe the ticky tack bullshit won't be called forever. Believe it or not, he could be a lot better and get a lot more steals if treated fairly.

I'm guessing Jaden will get that respect soon. For one thing, he's not a whiner when calls go against him, and refs tend to appreciate a player who doesn't try to show them up.

These defensive numbers are extraordinary, especially for a guy who's still only 22. Despite being a natural forward, he defends point guards 26.8% of the time...and still he holds his man to 32% shooting! Plus he is "an elite weak-side rim protector". We are lucky to have him.

When KAT returns, we will have a starting lineup that compares favorably with any team in the Association. Gobert and Conley are the common elements between our lineup and the Utah lineup that won 49 games last year, and while the Utah supporting cast of Mitchell, O'Neal and Bogdanovic was pretty good, I don't think anyone would trade KAT/Ant/Jaden for them.
