They'd be giving up not only a good player but a significant salary slot with no way to replace either. The latter part is more important if you believe the Timberwolves need to upgrade from him or trade for a better player at another position. You will need salary to match. It's either extend him or trade him at this point.
Yeah, absolutely cannot let him walk now. Waiting til the deadline brings potential chemistry issues too.
I think 4/80 - 90 is fair on both sides, 4/100 I can live with, but he knows he has extra leverage now, more per is likely.
I'd prefer to find a taker this offseason for those reasons.
But that has it's own added issues - we have no backup plan at PG that is anywhere near the talent, other teams know that too. No firsts to work with, or any talent to spare. That was one of my main gripes about jumping the Gobert trade before extending our players who can walk.
I generally agree with you Future. I don't think the Wolves will let DLO walk. If they do, they won't have cap space to replace him with someone not on the roster. I don't think Connelly will want to relay on the MLE to acquire a replacement PG unless it becomes clear that they don't need a PG to run the offense because of the development of Edwards and/or Nowell. Here's my assessment of the least and most likely scenarios:
1. Least likely: Trading DLO at or close to the February trade deadline. I just don't see this happening. If DLO is performing poorly at the deadline, the Wolves won't get a good return on DLO. They'd have to find a team interested in DLO solely for cap relief - in which case the Wolves would have to take on a similarly large annual salary that extends at least a season if not more beyond DLO's contract. One possibility might be the Nets wanting to jettison Simmons' contract to start a full scale rebuild with maximum cap space. But something like that is highly improbably in my view. If DLO is performing well at the deadline that probably means the Wolves will be doing well and I can't see the Wolves trading DLO under those circumstances.
2. Possible: I can see the Wolves extending DLO this summer. But I don't see this happening either. The Wolves front office obviously expects to pay the luxury tax eventually having just acquire Gobert and extended KAT. The Wolves are all in on trying to win a championship in each of the next four years. Therefore, money isn't the issue. That means I don't see any financial impediment to extending DLO this summer. However, I don't think the Wolves will pay DLO until they're sure he's the right fit with the core of the team, which will now consistent of Edwards, KAT and Gobert. I think they'll wait until next summer to see what the market for DLO is and what alternatives might be available.
3. Most Likely: I think the Wolves will let DLO's contract expire and look to re-sign him next summer at the market rate. In other words, rather than extending DLO at what the team perceives to be his market value, they'll more likely wait until free agency next summer and find out what his actual market value is. If he has a good season and the team is successfully, they'll end up paying DLO a lot to keep him. If he has a mediocre or bad season, then the Wolves can re-sign him for less and will probably re-sign him unless he was absolutely horrible or has serious physical issues.
