"No other deals were there for the taking that yielded what this deal yields. Stauskas?? no thanks."
I don't know where to begin with this. Young player with the potential to significantly help in a category we're fucking terrible at (three-point shooting) or a 38-year old PF that we could have signed in the off-season? How is this even a debate let alone you siding with the wrong option?
Long-term asset (Stauskas in this case) >>> Old man, "mentor", great story, reunited and it feels.... like shit because we overpaid like hell for him.
Zzzzzzzzing!! You hear that, boys? That's Flip getting fleeced again.

Heh, Cam you are pretty distraught here, aren't you?
Maelstrom, Cam is right in that we could have just signed KG in the offseason. Why part with Young if we weren't going to get anything else back? And his opting in wouldn't have been the end of the world for us, as we simply weren't going to go chasing free agents this summer anyway.

Asked about trading that Miami 1st pick basically for KG, Flip guaranteed KG will have more impact than that pick ever will have

Flip says early plan is to play KG 10-20 minutes. Let Bennett, Payne chew up most of minutes.
hmm something doesn't add up here...

Seriously Cam...you want to debate on why we didn't trade for Stauskas? Here's my reasons:
1. Our biggest category of need is the 4 spot and rebounding and interior defense (not 3 pt shooting.)
2. You trade Thad for Stauskas, then who plays the 4 and where does Stauskas fit in the rotation?
AB starts Payne off the bench? Or would Hummel Start?
3. He's not a mentor for our other 7 second or third year players
4. Suspect Defender
5. Kmart will have a longer career than him in the NBA. Kmart is a better shooter.
He's not the answer we are looking for at the backup 2 spot. Lavine is penciled in there for a few years then KMart.

If we draft Towns, given what we spent to acquire Payne, Young would have been in no man's land: a guy in his walk year on a bad team who can't produce numbers to make himself look better because there are better options ahead of him.
KG faces this dilemma but at 38-39 years old doesn't need the PT.

I hear you Q...either way it would have worked out...
Flip probably figured he could guarantee himself saving the Thad OPT-IN money and getting the KG deal done sooner rather than later excites the players now? He's using the last 30 games as a prep for next year so might as well get KG on board now so we can start next season fast.
Also, get Thad out so the young guys play.....Payne, AB, Towns....and KG gets a few limited minutes...

then why consider him to sign an extension?

To be a player coach/mentor who needs very few minutes. My guess is deal will be very low dollar.

then just make him a coach or a mentor then, it's even cheaper, doesn't count against the cap or a roster spot.

because like I said, he doesn't need the PT, but he can assist by being a mentor to the guys that are here. This is the intangible pick up that we have sought after for so long to help with the youngins.
I'll repeat what I said when we got Payne:
why does it cost us a premium to get marginal players? A first for a backup PF? I like Payne, don't get me wrong, but between Payne and Bjelica (nevermind Young and Bennett), this better not mean we won't take a PF if there's one available with our pick
You're missing my point. It shouldn't have to cost us a future potential first rounder when it seems like everyone else can find their backups and fringe rotation guys in the 2nd round and the scrap heap. That's what I'm saying.
and again, I like Payne. I would have taken him or Gary Harris ahead of Zach LaVine no questions asked, but he's at best our backup PF, and in a league where teams don't have to spend so much to get these type of players, we're using actual assets. That's the annoying aspect of this deal. Again, I'm not knocking Payne. I just hope we don't use and Payne and/or Bjelica as an excuse to not go with a big man this upcoming draft.
If there's anything to be mad about, it's the fact that we can't just go out and spend the same as other teams to get the same thing. We're always paying extra. That's the big problem.
