Go for 2 in Philly - GDT
Re: Go for 2 in Philly - GDT
I don't know what's worse.. the horrid officiating, or the inability of our guys to play the same damn clutch and grab way.

I already assumed they were related.

Ugh, poor game. The poor 1st half defense and 2nd half turnovers just killed us. Brown is an outstanding coach. They basically have three legit NBA players and a bunch of D-league guys. But they play defense and share the ball. You could see the contrast in defense between the two teams by just how aggressively their perimeter guys pressed up on our players. You rarely see any of our players put that kind of effort in.

Thad needs to go. He thinks he is a point forward WAY to often, sure, he gets lucky once in a while, but he is awful in transition. And why in the sam-hell are we running sets that have Wiggins standing at the 3 point line on the weakside and posting Thad????????? Flip must be "showcasing " Thad for a trade, at least that has to be the reason. Really pisses me off when I see that.......

Gorgui and Nikola played well tonight. Outside of those two, everyone struggled, including Wiggins, Martin and Young. That's why we lost tonight. Not enough production from guys that we need to carry the load.
Calling for Thad's head won't change the fact we've lost to the Sixers twice. Acting like it's all his fault is stupid too. And it should be to nobody's surprise that we struggled. Zach LaVine and Lorenzo Brown were our PGs tonight. It was bad enough with the PG duo we had previously that included Mo Williams, but now we really cannot compete to win without crazy games from others.

And i really don't care about wins at this point...if we are in development mode, why the hell is Thad the focal point for the offense? He should be standing in the corner with Dieng and Wiggins in the play....

We don't have a focal point to our offense. Everyone gets their turns. Whether our PG dribbles it up and dumps it to Young/Pek/Dieng/Muhammad/Wiggins in the post.. Or Zach dribbles east/west before dumping it to anyone.. Or Martin goes iso on the wing.. Or Williams goes high screen and roll and takes a pull up midrange jumper.. That's our offense this year without Rubio.
You cannot throw young guys on the floor without vets and expect them to play good basketball. And guess what? Playing good basketball is great for development. Vets are needed. Why do you think that game against Boston was fun to watch? It was the first time in a long time that it looked like we were a competent basketball team.

Veteran status means nothing if the vet turns the ball over 5 times, mostly late in crunch time, while also shooting 30% from the field and compiling a -9. Of course I'm talking about Thad Young. His turnovers in the 4th quarter weren't the product of good defense - just boneheaded play by Thad. Martin's veteran presence wasn't any better than Thad's as Martin turned the ball over 4 times while hitting only 5 of 18 shots. Wiggins didn't have a particularly good game, but he turned the ball over only once and scored 15 points. Moreover, he and Gorgui were the only guys giving us any productivity in the 4th quarter. Pek had a great 1st half but was invisible the entire 2nd half.
The great irony tonight and more often than not this season with the Wolves is that it's the vets more than the young guys who turn the ball over, disappear in crunch time and often look disoriented out there. I agree it helps to have a few vets blended in with the younger guys. But they have to be vets who bring true veteran qualities to the team - like smart decision-making, steadiness, savvy and leadership. Since we rarely see those qualities from Thad, Mo or Martin, I don't consider their veteran status as having much if any value to this team. At least Martin is usually an excellent 3-point and perimeter shooter with a nice knack for getting to the foul line. He can generally put up 18 points in his sleep. So I see the value in keeping him around the rest of this season and perhaps beyond. But the Mo and Thad should be at the top of our for-sale list this February. They might actually be helpful to a top tier veteran team, but they do little if anything positive for the Wolves long term or even short term.

Thr big complaint for me as far as Flip's coaching is the bad to non existent defense. As Q points out, they are in the same boat we are, but there is a concept of team defense being taught in Philly. Flip has failed here.

Went to popcorn machine gameflows and Pek and Dieng were in the "plus" column again when they played together.
