Worst case scenario by the end of 2021 is that Vanderbilt is splitting minutes with Okongwu or Avdija or Reed or some other rookie. There is a legit roster crunch here and unless Rosas is gonna rearrange furniture yet again, something has to give.
Deep down I also don't see a scenario where Beasley, Edwards or Ball + another rookie perhaps, Nowell, Okogie and Culver are all on the team. The minutes just aren't there.
No doubt some roster moves will occur. Who stays and who goes will obviously depend on what the Wolves end up with as a result of the draft. As for Vanderbilt, I don't think he'll be on the roster at the end of the upcoming season.
I agree that we have a massive logjam at SG: Beasley (assuming he is signed), Okogie, Culver, Nowell, and Evans. Something's gotta give there. I know Okogie and Culver could play some SF in a small-ball lineup, but not sure it's their ideal position. Add Edwards into the mix if we draft him and the logjam only gets worse.
I think James Johnson and Jarred Vanderbilt could make for a very intriguing combination sharing the PF slot. It would require that they are out there with shooters. And of course if we draft and keep Wiseman, then things really get muddled in the front court because Saunders will have to figure out how much he can play next to KAT.
James Johnson is on a one-year deal and Jarred Vanderbilt has yet to prove himself to be an NBA rotation player. James Wiseman would instantly be the best 4/5 on the roster besides Karl-Anthony Towns, obviously. Everything else behind them would figure itself out.
I disagree that we can assume he'd instantly be better than James Johnson. Certainly he has a ton of upside and there would be a mandate for him to play lots of minutes. But he's still going to be a rookie big that will likely get torched on a nightly basis as his length isn't going to make up for his inability to stay down on his feet and move laterally.
As for Vanderbilt, he's at least been around the NBA game for a couple of seasons and is probably maturing into his body more at this point. I consider him a wildcard that could surprise on the upside this season.
I don't see drafting a big like Wiseman or Okongwu creating any serious roster issues. If we end up drafting one of those two, I would expect Johnson to start at PF next to KAT until the young draftee plays his way into the starting line up. I would also expect Wiseman or Okongwu to be part of the rotation petty quickly. There are plenty of minutes for KAT, Johnson, Naz Reid and Wiseman/Okongwu. And as Cam mentioned, Johnson will be here on a one-year player option. Vanderbilt has a long, long way to go to show he's worthy of anything but garbage minutes. And there's no compelling need to re-sign H-Gomez.
We'll be a bit overloaded with wings if we draft Edwards. Unlike H-Gomez, re-signing Beal should be, and apparently is, a priority. Assuming we re-sign Beasley as expected, we'll have Culver, Okogie, Beasley, Edwards and Nowell for two positions along with Layman at the SF spot.
Rosas said they'll take the best player available without regard to team need. So if his front office sees Edwards as the best available. If they're smart, they still won't feel any urgency to trade any of the team's current wings and, instead, will take most if not all of the season to see how things play out. I'm assuming Rosas will trim Jacob Evans and Omari Spellman from the roster with buy-outs or trades. I think both have enough trade value that the Wolves won't have to add assets to entice other teams to take them, although obviously we won't get much in return for them.
Bottom line is that I'm not worried about overcrowding at any position. I just want to add talent. The roster can always be sorted out.
