It would take more than Russell but Ben's value continues to drop. The Sixers blatantly need a pure scorer next to Joel Embiid, I'm trying to think of some other players like that they could go for. I think Bradley Beal would have been an option if they weren't saddled with Westbrook's contract.

Mmmm, I kind of hear ya, but I think I was always honest about Ricky's flaws and felt that he was more of a complimentary piece that indeed needed scorers and shooters around him. He never became the star many of us hoped when he was originally drafted, but he was absolutely a plus player for this franchise and I always defended him as a plus player versus the guy to lay blame on for our losing ways.

Some of us initially thought that Ricky would eventually develop into a good perimeter shooter based on his terrific free-throw shooting. But alas, there came a point before he left MN when it was clear he'd never become a good shooter. At that point, I was with Q in seeing Ricky as a good complementary player. The lesson of Simmons is a team is that it's particularly difficult to win a championship if one of your team's two stars is a really bad perimeter and free-throw shooter. That's part of the challenge the Bucks face with Giannis.

I haven't watched the Sixers much this year but I've felt like they have some other flaws on that team besides Simmons shooting which I'm not dismissing. I think they likely miss Danny Green quite a bit. Even if the other guards have stepped up as starters it hurts the bench.

Danny Green wasn't doing much for them in the playoffs, so I'm not sure how much they miss him. But they'd certainly be better off to some degree having Green available. The Sixers are a great team with two elite players (Simmons and Embiid) and an allstar (Harris). They also have some nice depth behind those three. The Sixers really have two flaws: Simmons' poor perimeter/free-throw shooting and Embiid's lack of durability. Otherwise, they'd be the team to beat now with two of the Nets' three stars hurting.

I think you can if you can keep 3-4 good to great shooters on the floor with him at the same time, but I agree that's really tough to do. Towns might be one of the better big guys to match him up with because he can shoot so well from deep. Embiid can shoot from outside pretty well, but he's not nearly as good as Towns and he's soso much better in the post and midrange. Plus Thybulle isn't really a great shooter so you can't play those two together much. The Sixers do have Green and Curry, which has definitely helped them survive Simmons' nonexistent shooting. But it is tough if you have a guy like that who just can't shoot at all.

Unfortunately, trading Russell for Simmons would take away our second-best deep threat too. I've criticized DLO up and down and don't want to get back into it here. But one thing I'll say for him is he's a very good shooter, which is what you need around Simmons.

For the record, I would trade DLO for Ben in a heartbeat. Even if you couldn't get the shooting around him that you'd need to compete at the highest level, that's still a more moveable contract than DLO's. Bottom line, I'm pretty confident our defense will never be good enough to win with Russell out there, while Ben would really help turn this defense around and there's at least a chance you could get the shooting around him to compete.

Don't worry though, when we win the lottery in a few days, we'll have another point forward to start thinking about!

Agreed. Also, there is Ricky Rubio's reluctance and mediocre accuracy with outside shooting and then there is Ben Simmons, who simply WILL NOT SHOOT. Ricky is also a much more reliable FT shooter which helps when teams get in the penalty.

Again, Ben Simmons is better than Ricky in other ways, but there is an order of magnitude difference in their shooting woes.
