FWIW Jon K said Ryan was big in recruiting Vanterpool to the Wolves. Let's be honest something got him here the Blazers have a pretty organization and culture and head coach. I'd guess he has even more influence than he had in Portland. And yes if he gets this team to actually defend then yeah he won't be here long and that's ok.

Smart leaders aren't just smart themselves it's having good people around them and they actually ultimately those guys. If the assistants are actually really good supporting Ryan that is a positive all around and shows we have a positive with Rosas etc making decisions.

As for it being early yes it is but We are 4-1 and yes the competition hasn't been amazing but that victory on the road against Washington without Towns where we looked like a vastly superior team was pretty impressive. Regardless the early returns have been positive. Like Q said it's still early.

I agree with most of what you put here, monster. The bolded section is likely inevitable, but it's only okay if the defensive growth -- assuming Minnesota is a respectable defensive team for the rest of the season -- remains after Vanterpool is gone. If it doesn't, it's an indicator that perhaps he was the guy that should have stuck instead of Saunders. Wouldn't that be the Minnesota way.

The reality is IF this is a good organization they find another smart person to run the defense. Just because Vanterpool is a good defensive coach doesn't mean he should be the head coach. He is VERY highly respected around the league though which again it's surprising we got him here even for a year. But yeah MN has let the better coaches go a few times in their sports history...

He was bad tonight. We ran no offense. Gave up 137pts to the 2nd worst offense in the NBA. Played our All NBA defender 26 minutes while Dillion Brooks was going off. Played McLaughlin 10 to many minutes and way to many 4th quarter minutes. So little Kat post ups

I can see the offense being a bit out of sorts without Teague and Napier. Still, we scored enough points and were OK efficiency wise. It's not like nothing went in for us and we only turned it over 11 times. That doesn't sound like a major offensive breakdown even though we did rush some shots.

In my opinion, these guys got sloppy on defense, didn't play our best defensive player nearly enough minutes, and Memphis was making everything they threw up there. Bad night on that end of the floor.

As long as KAT is playing, we're going to score. Even his off nights on offense are pretty good.

It was definitely the defense. We got
killed on the boards too. I assume that defense is part of the system but i didnt see anything systematic tonight.

Yeah, I am all for playing small ball for a good portion of games, but I really think starting Vonleh and KAT to start the 1st and 3rd quarters would not be a bad idea. RoCo moves to the 3, Wiggins to the 2, and now we are a lot bigger and longer all the way around. I mean, does Graham really give us that much more agility and skill than Vonleh!? That is what the tradeoff is - Vonleh for Graham. Doesn't seem like we suddenly lose all this team speed and skill....
