I will be really pissed off if we just cut Bayless, he is a legit asset right now. I feel like we can add a legit player or pick if we package him with Taj. That is 22 million in expirings. That is an asset to me for a legit PF and a solid backup PG.

I am fine cutting him at the deadline but if we do it now I will be very mad

Dario Saric should get the bulk of the PF minutes for the rest of the season. I'm in agreement with you that maybe we could package Taj Gibson and Jerryd Bayless to get something -- maybe even a first-round pick depending on the trade partner. As I see it, though, power forward is not a hole.

I worded it very poorly. What I ment is Taj is a solid PF and Bayless is a solid backup PG so there 22 million expiring contracts come with quality nba talent along with the contracts

If Bayless gets cut it'll probably happen after the deadline.

I think the market for Taj is gonna be brutal because seemingly every good team has a stretch big already and figure they could get Taj if the Wolves buy him out.

Best case scenario would be Taj to Houston for Brandon Knight and a protected first.

Meh, maybe, but I think the playoff-tested and proven Taj Gibson is going to have a handful of suitors at the deadline if the Wolves choose to deal him, which is no given, especially if they were to be in a playoff race. And if not, I'm not sure they'd buy him out considering he's a good guy to have around Karl-Anthony Towns and might even be re-signed for pretty cheap after this year.

You can't really have enough good defenders in the playoffs. I think a team that's all-in, like Toronto or San Antonio, would have interest in him.

I'd do that trade for two first-round picks, but not one. I think Gibson has near late first-round pick value alone without taking on a bad contract. Knight's making $15.6M next year and is pretty much a no-show. That's pretty ugly. Would have to make the Rockets pay up.

Houston's not doing that then.

In 2018 the value of expirings are solely to take on another team's bad contract, and those teams would throw in a pick for your troubles. Otherwise the Rockets would just wait for the buyout market to open up.

As for Toronto and San Antonio, Toronto traded their first this year to San Antonio in the DeRozan trade, so there goes that. The Spurs simply don't have a contract to match up to even trade for Taj if need be. Again those teams would just wait for the team to buy out Taj if it came to that.

Sure, but in the traditional situation you're presenting, the team that's receiving the bad contract and the first-round pick isn't also giving up anything of value. Normally, we'd see a team take the bad contract and absorb it without sending anything back and then taking the asset for their troubles.

In the deal you laid out, the Wolves would also be giving up a decent player who I'd think would have some value around the league. That in itself costs something.

I wonder if the Spurs would have interest in a Pau Gasol, Bryn Forbes, and their 2019 first-round pick for Taj Gibson, Derrick Rose, and James Nunnally.

I think one problem with dealing Taj is he makes 14 million. Teams are gonna have to include some decent salary to match that. That usually means giving up something you want or...a guy nobody wants so you need to get paid for that. Tolliver if he agrees to a trade would be easier to deal. I do thing Taj will have teams that would want him. OKC is a team I could see having interest.
