we get rid of him first chance we get. Teams get better when he leaves. Kings should consider themselves grateful
He's only left two teams and Memphis had a 56 win season (2012-13) during the last season Gay was there. After Gay left, Memphis has won 50, 55, 42 and 43. I don't know how you can conclude from this that Gay's departure improved Memphis. Gay was only in Toronto for like a year (actually two half seasons) and the year he came in Toronto won 34 games and his last year with Toronto, they won 48. Toronto won 56 the year after Gay departed, but that could just as easily be attributed to the emergence of Kyle Lowry (whose game really took off) and improvement by DeRozan. Sacramento was bad before Rudy Gay and is no worse after Rudy Gay joined. Maybe, you can make the case that he hasn't carried anybody (and it looks like that so far is the case), but I don't see any convincing evidence that he makes teams worse. In fact, his plus/minus stats have generally been positive. We wouldn't need him to carry us and if he came here cheaply and the health issues are addressed, then I think he could be useful. Gay is not a must get guy, but he's an option to consider if we strike out on all the other big names.
It's a good joke to tell that those teams got better after he left but look at what those teams got for him...next to nothing and they either did get better or were as good. I wouldnthold that against him at this point though. When the Kings signed him to this last contract I thought it was actually a pretty fair deal. Before this injury the guy could play and was plenty solid. He can't be a top 3 guy on a good team. Now his Achilles injury makes it murky. What would you pay him? How effective would he be coming off an injury? He hasn't exactly been an iron man the couple years and turns 31 in August. i feel like it's like years ago and people are still fascinated with him. I'm not particularly interested but we may have to take a shot at him though like Ricky said if other options don't work out. It kinda sucks.
My main issue with Rudy is his injury. Coming back from an Achilles is iffy. I'm with Cool in liking Gallo's game, but also share Cool's concern over his health. My bottom line on any major off-season acquisition is to avoid giving my valuable assets or tying up major cap space on anyone with any history of physical issues. That's why I wouldn't pursue Rudy or Gallo. Nor would I pursue Griffin even if I though he might be interested in signing here. It's also why I'm reluctant to give up the major assets it would take to get Jimmy Butler. His physical issues aren't as serious as Rudy's or Gallo's. But his history is troubling. He's played more than 67 games in only two of his six NBA seasons. Couple that with his knee soreness in this year's playoffs and I see a yellow flag if not a red one. Contrast that with Millsap who has played fewer than 70 games in only two of his 11 seasons.
Sometimes we overlook the value of durability. It's a big part of what makes KAT and Wiggins so valuable. Talent, skill, mental toughness, etc. mean little to nothing sitting on the bench.

But what about mentorship? Look at all the mentorship KG gave to us and how much better off we were defensively for it.....oh......never mind.
I think Gay is basically a replacement level starting small forward if asked to be a top 2 scoring option. But I've wondered how he would do if his role was narrowed to be a wing defender first and foremost, with being a 3rd or 4th option offensively. With his size and strength, I could see him being a younger and better version of what Vince Carter currently does for Memphis. But the achilles.....that's a legit concern.
I also like Gallo because the dude has no conscience when it comes to shooting 3's. He just rises up and fires away confidently. Plus he can play some small ball 4. But his durability and his defense when he is healthy are both big question marks.
Let's face it, there is no "perfect" free agent fit for us! Risks will need to be taken.
1. I think Rudy Gay gets a bad rap. He's been a good player.
2. But he has serious limitations... and as noted teams have been able to replace him easily and win at the same or better level.
3. The list of players who recovered fully from an achilles tear includes... (???)...
4. Gay will be 31. The list of guys who improved in their 30s includes...
5. Pass.
6. I see no upside...

Well done Abe

Speaking of Vince Carter I think I would rather have him than Gay. I assume he stays in Memphis since he said he wants to stay there and even built a spot at his house for their rookie D. Davis to hang out at.

Durability is massively under rated in the NBA. With a gruelling 82 game seasons you can't afford to lose your top players for extended periods, especially in the post season. Just ask the Clippers.
It's crazy that over the years so many players have been rejected by this board becuz they're not "5 tool" players so to speak. And now people are warming up to the Gays and Korvers of the world.

Who didn't want Korver all these years?
I'm on record claiming that in the modern NBA, if you're not really good at several things... you can still be extremely valuable if you're elite at one thing.
