I think it will take him being a bust and years of time to die down. If he sucks everyone will just go at his dad who will then use it to get back in the spotlight again. He's an any news is good news kind of guy. The only short term way for it to go away is for companies like ESPN to just ignore him and not give him another platform to speak on. It's too much at the end of the day though to ask everyone to turn him away because there will always be another outlet looking to get him on to raise their brand as well. It's a shitty circle that will never end.

We have at least 4 more years (probably much more) of hearing how great LiAngelo and LiMelo are from LaVarr, so this is not going away. I really want Lonzo to do well, despite his dad, but hopefully someone puts dad in his place along the way.

I may be in the minority but after finding out more about the family I am in support of Lavar. He saw the unethical way that the shoe companies in partnership with agents treat these kids as cattle from a very young age. Many of whom are low income and desperate. In response he is trying to pave a way independently in a monopolized market. He made his own AAU team for his kids and branded it himself without selling out to any shoe company. Is he loud, brash and annoying? Of course. But so are Nike and Addidas. He rightly recognizes that a large chunk of the sport has turned into selling sneakers and maybe some sprite too. If we criticize Lavar we should even more so the large shoe companies who have been overcharging for cheap sneakers made by child labor for years.

Thats all well and good, but $500 seems a bit steep for shoes don't you think?

I hope they're all just average NBA guys so the brand is worth nothing. Lavar takes the biggest hit and his kids don't have to suffer as a result. BBB only works if they become stars.

I actually think it's pure genius. He isn't catering to everyone, he is letting every other shoe company compete at the 50-200 dollar levels. It also created huge publicity 6 months before they are even released or before Alonzo steps on the court. Allowing them to gain seed money. Further, there are plenty of people in this world who love buying things that most deem unaffordable or can't at least rationalize paying for it. He will sell thousands upon thousands this first year because of that. That will amount to millions. That's not to mention the amount of athletes (former and current) who will buy them and endorse them (see chad Johnson) because they support what Lavar is trying to do to shake up the monopoly companies like Nike have in sports entertainment. Hell, if Ball turns out special then Nike, Adidas, etc. are looking at competing with many more start up brands by players.
Lavar is not a stupid man.

Doper's right that big shoe companies exploit labor and make obscene profits on cheap quality gear. Of course, all of us who buy that stuff are complicit in it as well.
But I still hate LaVar Ball and the media feeding frenzy over the stupid stuff he says. In some ways he's the traditional horrible sports dad, but it's like the internet feedback loop has amped up his ignorant, selfish, boastful, trollish behavior. Isn't it bad enough we already have one of these as president?

Totally. But anything beyond 40$ is ridiculous for shoes manufactured in China. Lavar needs to pay for the manufacturing cost at a first run. If he doesn't want loans or outside investors it his only opportunity right now to charge enough to manufacture at low volume. If his kids are good and the shoes become in demand the price will come down.

Hell, even if his kids aren't any good, he will pull in multiple extra million off these shoes before anyone even knows it. He is hedging his bets. Hype up his son, get talked about everywhere, throw out a shoe, let people buy it, sit back with millions and have his whole family set for life regardless of what else happens.
I'm not the highest on Lonzo, but I wish to see him succeed over anyone else in this draft. Besides our pick of course.
