I vote trade him so long as they can get a decent return.

I interpret Doogie's comments as he knows Thibs like Lucas, with a decent chance he might stick on the roster. But the Tyus trade talk is pure speculation.

I will be surprised if either Tyus or Lucas are not on the roster to start the season.

OK...this poll is a bust, as everyone is voting the same way. Let me see if I can convince someone to vote for a trade.

Doogie says three teams are interested, and they know they have to offer something. And Thibs has signaled clearly in preseason that he sees Tyus as a third string PG. So, the question is this...what is more valuable than a third string PG? I would argue that a second round pick (or 2) from a lottery team is more valuable than a guy who's only going to see the floor if another PG gets hurt. And I don't think a team that really needs a competent PG would hesitate to give up a second round pick (or 2) to fill that need.

Anybody want to vote for a trade?

Edit: never mind...SP made the poll more interesting by voting for a trade.

I completely agree Tim.

edit:

I listened to Wolfson's podcast or least the first few minutes. He says Lucas is a lock for the roster (that I can buy) and is the team's 3rd PG. I'm curious as to how he came up with Lucas being THE third PG espcaily since he has only played 2 games and in those games he basically played as a SG some of the time. Anyway because of that take he basically went even farther and said the teams that have shown interest and he would not be surprised if the Wolves do something with Tyus before the season. Again I don't see based on what Thibs and Layden have done so far them trading Tyus who is a young player. He also said the Heat has shown some interest in Payne which those reports always sound to good to be true. lol

If Lucas makes the roster then i see him as strictly Rubio insurance.

If rubio goes down, he is the sole vet presence at pg that can be plugged in if tyus or dunn seem overwhelmed. If rubio is healthy, then Lucas sits on the bench all year.

Neither option leads me to believe tyus will be traded.

This is difficult for me because I loved the Tyus pick when he was drafted. I don't think he embarrassed himself last year as a rookie. He's done well in the D-League and in Summer League. I feel like he'll be a decent back up PG. That said, I voted "trade him". I voted that based on the reports that they will keep Lucas. If the reports are true and Thibbs has decided on his three PGs, then you might as well deal Tyus and get what you can get. I don't see Tyus surpassing Rubio or Dunn, so at best he'll be stuck as an undersized 3rd PG here anyhow. Yes, injuries happen. But I assume the thought process is that an established vet like Lucas would be fine as a 3rd option and Tyus might have more trade value. Finally, knowing Thibbs teams are defense oriented, I don't know if Tyus would be a fit here long term as I don't think that's been his calling up to this point compared to Rubio/Dunn. As far as the concern of trading low or recouping the three 2nd round picks....that's all water under the bridge. Flip reached/overpaid at the time to get the guy he wanted. He did the same with Payne. And KG. Those deals are done. All we can do is try to make better deals going forward.

Although I voted "no trade", I think that is pretty good logic, Carlos. I argued above that a second round pick or two is worth more than a third string PG, but Tyus may even be Thibs' 4th string PG. My fondest wish is that Dunn can control his TOs and become a better shooter, and gain my confidence as a legitimate NBA PG...thereby making Tyus expendable. But since I'm still skeptical about Dunn's future as a PG, my more realistic wish is that Thibs moves Dunn to backup SG and lets Tyus back up Ricky. But since Thibs has shown no interest in trying Dunn at SG this preseason (even when he was paired with Lucas for a few minutes, Lucas was the SG), my vote switches over to trading Tyus if we could get a pick or 2.

I'm still scratching my head as to how Thibs and Layden (mostly Thibs) could rank Lucas ahead of Tyus as a player. Yes, Lucas is a "veteran" - a veteran that has played 237 games in the NBA. Just as a comparison, the twice-injured 25-year old Ricky Rubio has played 278 games. Lucas is no Andre Miller.

He's also undersized and brings no discernible stand-out skill to the table. I don't get what value he adds once the real games begin.

Lets be honest here nobody is trading Tyus because we have Lucas. He can be cut at anytime so the Wolves could pick up some other player of needed. This whole idea of trading Tyus because Lucas is likely to make the team is a joke.

Also the idea that we should trade Tyus for just a 2nd rounder because he may project to be just a 3rd PG is a poor justification also. You want depth on the roster and Tyus may have a long term or at the very least a few more seasons of his rookie deal here. What if Dunn becomes the starter 13 months from now and the team is able to move Rubio for a nice return and Tyus becomes a fantastic complimentary backup PG?

Also this stuff about Thibs only liking defensive players is bogus too. He LOVES Rose and and had those scoring PGs and none of them were all that great defensively. Heck is Lucas good defensively? I don't think so.

John Lucas. Yuck. He's a borderline NBA-level player. I'm disappointed that there's a chance he'll make the team. There's no upside to his game. We know exactly what we're getting...

A undersized 3rd rate PG that can't shoot. And he's not a plus passer either. The only thing he has going for him is that he played 51 games for Thibs in the past and can help with the transition to his principles. Again... YUCK.

I like Tyus Jones. Granted, he was overwhelmed last season and played poorly by almost any metric. But he's young and has shown some signs of improvement. Plus, I'm a provincial rube at heart. So there's that.

But we're talking about the team's 3rd PG (if Rubio stays). There are probably teams out there who view Jones as a 2nd PG. So there's an opportunity to improve value via trade.

More importantly, the Wolves under Thibs has not changed the roster much. I think we all know that in a league with a lot of turnover... a franchise with a brand-new head coach/GM... coming off 53 losses... can expect change. A lot of it.

I'm convinced it's going to happen. There's something to be said for seeing these guys in real games first. But Thibs has his own way of doing things. And that almost surely differs from Sam Mitchell and/or Flip Saunders.

Whether or not Jones gets traded, I won't be surprised if anybody outside of Karl Anthony Towns, Wiggins and LaVine gets traded. And I wouldn't even be shocked if LaVine or Wiggins were moved at some point if Thibs found a deal he loved.
