Every time some mentions "Smitch" or "Samitch", I only hear Haymitch in my brain. Can we just call Sam "Haymitch"?

I'd look foolish if I voiced too much displeasure over Sam's performance so far. All that really matters is wins and losses, and he is getting the job done there. But as this board has a tendency to do (on everything), let's not get ahead of ourselves on crowning Sam the answer after 6 games.

There are a couple things I really like about him though. First, he does a good job of working the officials. I think when you have a losing culture like we do and have been looked at as the doormats of the league for so long, this is important. NBA officials are human beings and can be influenced buy a lot of things during a game. I think Sam is making sure we get a fair shake, and that's a good thing,

Second, much like I see in Towns, Sam seems to have a passion for winning. All coaches do, but I like how engaged he is during the games. He gives me the feeling that he really cares and is doing everything possible to put us in the best position to win.

As far as critiquing his overall performance? Let's talk after 30 games and see how he is doing.

I mentioned in another thread that I think there is a general consensus that he is tactically lacking. But for a young team he is hitting on the points they need right now- such as instilling discipline to always give it your all, playing within yourself, rewarding effort. Eventually this team will outgrow him (like GS with Jackson), but for now I like the match.

Cool - Well put. I think he is doing a great job of winning/developing players. I think starting Prince has been a great move to start the season.

I have no idea if Sam is tactically lacking. But it was pretty savvy of him to make sure Wiggins got the ball in crunch time, even when Atlanta wanted to deny him. Jim Pete noted it, and Sam commented on it as well in his post game interview.

Fair point Tim. I followed the Raptors pretty close during his tenure and it always seemed like the system aspects of tactics were not his strength. But tactics in terms of matchups and momentum, maybe he is a genius.

Sam has said when he was in Toronto he tried to do everything when he was the head coach. Maybe he has learned some tacticall things and maybe he will get input from someone next to him that can help him there. I can't say anyone jumps out at me as the guy as an assistant to help him with tactics but I think there have been young assistants that have made an impact on teams in that way nobody really knew about. Coaching impact can be hard to quantify if it's not abundantly clear one way or another. I would say this team has done mostly what Sam has asked them to do. It's tough to argue with that and the outcome is impressive so far. Hopefully they come out tonight and get a win.

Andrew Wiggins took a fall last night, probably won't play tonight. Told they're trying to get him ready
