Sam's coaching was bad this game. His biggest blunder was not calling timeout when the hawks made a huge run on our 2nd unit.

The whole 'letting them learn and play tru it' is not a good excuse. If he wanted the 2nd unit to play tru it, he could still call a timeout, settle things for them and stop the momentum of the other team and don't sub out his 2nd unit. Instead, we have lavine bringing the ball up and either him or bazz going ISO with the vet Kmart apparently running away from the ball and having a last option kick out to bjelica who is hesitating whether to drive and risk get call for a travel or to shoot a long 3. Sam could simply give them instructions, give them a pep talk with a timeout yet he allowed the hawks to gain big momentum with us not knowing what to do.

Wig, KAT and bjelica' s 2 clutch 3 in the 4th won us the game.

Guy was getting whatever he wanted when he went to the rack, he was basically getting whatever shot he wanted. Of course it all went downhill quickly in the 2nd when we needed a floor general in there but that's not his fault, he's not one. I would love to see Ricky and Lavine playing together.

He only had one turnover, but I really don't blame Sam for putting Miller in there. We needed a steady experienced hand in the game and he didn't want to come back with Ricky so soon. I really didn't see it as an indictment on Zach, I just saw it as time when Sam felt development could take a back seat to winning the game. Zach was exactly what I hope he will be tonight.

The irony was Miller was terrible, there was no steady experienced hand in his minutes.

He looked like he was old and had hardly played any minutes yet this year! Oh wait.....

(Rubio played 27 minutes. I'm scratching my head as to why Mitchell didn't just go right to him).

Right or wrong I think Sam wants to limit ricky minutes for the long run this season

With this young team there will be plenty of games in which to rest Rubio, a game like tonight isn't the one to do it in IMO. And there is simply no explanation for KAT sitting so long when his D was so desperately needed!

Geez-louise! We just won a 2-game road trip against Chicago and Atlanta, and we are gonna sit here and complain about mistakes we think Sam has made?!?

I am not claiming Sam is perfect. No coach is. But he has done one helluva job putting this team in a position to be competitive, and even get some wins.

Not complaining so much as not understanding what goes through his mind while the Hawks make a huge run, and his bench is discombobulated but no timeout nor substitutions. I give Sam plenty of credit for what we've seen so far, but still don't understand many of his decisions!

That and KAT on the bench so long is the difference between questioning Sam and congratulating him on a great game!

Well, it could be genius. Rubio will have something left in the tank for tomorrow's game and so far so good on the injury front with this team. May be he's really playing the long game here and is willing to sacrifice an L or two in order to keep minutes down.

Could be, I just think early in the season when you have the chance to get this young team a signature win, something that on its own can set the tone for a season you don't risk it over a couple extra minutes rest for Rubio. These kind of wins can snowball real fast with a young, talented team. It's one thing to expect to win, it's another altogether to believe you will!!

Agreed Tim. I'd like to add that no one's giving him credit for sitting Martin at the end of this game. He's been playing him in end of game situations and it takes some balls to sit a guy that can put up some points.I'd have to guess he realized that Martin wasn't gonna make any stops. This game was won on key stops and defensive rebounds . He had the right players in the game at the end. Let's focus on that and not on the players that gave up the lead .

I think a lot of teams are starting to take a page out of Pop's book. Look at what Golden State has done with Curry. They dialed him back to 32 MPG last season in the prime of his career and he's on a similar track this season.

I honestly think part of what's going on here has to do with longer term injury prevention, not just in-game tactics.
