George Karl was so thirsty for a head coaching job he would have gone anywhere, including one of the worst rosters in the league (outside of Cousins its hard to like ANY of those pieces). Same can be said for numerous (older) candidates who know their biological coaching clock is ticking. Once things broke down with Joerger and heated up with Love, any GOOD candidate seemed turned off by the situation.

What good candidate was turned off? I don't think there were any to be turned off.

Rather than getting lost in a game thread, I thought it was important to post it in here since we are discussing coaching going forward...

Flip before the game in PDX tonight discussing Andrew Wiggins: "You don't want 3-pointers to become a major part of his game."

We HAVE to get a new coach. HAVE to.

Those are the kind of statements where the local media just needs to rip him a new one for being such a dumbass.

Glen Taylor responds to a draft question by refering to specific players - the guy at Ohio State (obviously Russell) and the big guys at Kentucky and Duke. I believe that commenting on college players in relation to the draft violates NBA rules. I would guess Glen be fined. Even if not, why would you tell the world, including other NBA teams, that Flip has talked up Russell??!! Why does Taylor always put his foot in his mouth nearly every time he opens it???! ! Then we have Flip saying Wiggins shouldn't have three point shooting as part of his game.

Yes folks, this franchise will remain a losing one for as far as the eye can see into the horizon. We hear a lot about basketball IQ in connection with the evaluation of draft prospects. I would guess that the average IQ in the Wolves front office, from ownership on down, is well down in the double digit range.

I agree about needing to get a new coach, but at the same time "major part of his game" is subjective. The question is, what does that mean to Flip? I don't really like the comment b/c of how few the team takes as a whole.

I'd like to see him up closer to about 3-4 a game and hitting them at a decent clip. He attacks the basket so well I wouldn't wan to see him sitting back jacking up 6-8 a game like some guys. He's at 1.5 3PA a game this year. In comparison Wade's career avg is 1.7 per, Lebron 4.0, Kobe 4.0. and Jordan 1.7. All of them averaging about 8 FTA per game their career as well. Not comparing him to them necessarily, but I find their numbers interesting. I would have thought Wade took more than that. I always knew Jordan was lower. I think it shows though that you can shoot a couple more and still get to the line plenty. Here's to hoping he gets up closer to the 4 a game range.

Well, Harden is the poster child of someone that is both elite at taking and making lots of 3's while at the same time getting to the rim and drawing tons of fouls. He avoids mid-range shots unless he absolutely has to take them. So it isn't an either/or scenario. Both are possible.

Jordan played in an era when the 3-point shot was still more of a novelty and you had "specialists" like Craig Hodges and Steve Kerr. Nowadays it should no longer be considered a specialty but something in the arsenal of nearly every perimeter player.

I agree that Wiggins priority and mindset should be to try to get into the paint as often as possible. So whatever Flip has done to encourage that mentality should be lauded. On the other hand, if Flip truly wants him to be an elite scorer in this league, it's a shot he's going to need to develop. He doesn't have the handles of Wade to create as many opportunities off the dribble. The other thing about making 3's is that it's so much easier on the body! And it counts for 50% more than a 2-pointer (this is the part Flip still doesn't get).

I fully admit that this season has left me hungry for any good news at all, but this is potentially terrific news for the Wolves. I recognize that initial reports are always that the surgery was successful (have we ever read "player X underwent unsuccessful surgery yesterday"), but the fact that they didn't have to replace the tendon, which would have required at least a year of rehab, is very good. Further, there is some belief that the bone rubbing against the tendon was the reason for Pek's constant pain. Imagine what this does for the Wolves' future if Pek is healthy and pain-free next year, and able to put up 20-10 in 65-70 games?

Being able to hit 36-40% from 3 on just a few more attempts per game will actually open Wiggins' game up more and Flip doesn't realize that. It's the difference between having to guard him out to the 3 point line and not which is huge in terms of the spacing Wiggins does or doesn't have to get around his guy to get to the bucket. I'm talking 4-5 attempts per game just to keep the defense honest and it will make him that much more unguardable and a better offensive player.

That would be huge since Wolves have every season including this year outrebounded its opponent with Pek in the floor. If Pek could play more than 50% of minutes next season, Wolves would be at least average rebounding team.

Even better would be if we would have next season coach that can design offense that gives Pek easy baskets at the rim. (I know that even layups aren't that easy in case of Pek but his FG% at rim use to be around .65 and this year with Flip's brilliant offense it has been around .55.
