Re: Hummel Signing
Hummel was probably signed so we could easier match salaries when we trade for LeBron.
Seriously though, Hummel would have to take a bit of a jump to be a rotation guy and I think he needs to add some muscle and polish some of his game to get to that point. Can he get there? Sure, he seems like he's got a reasonable basketball IQ and no terrible deficiencies, but I wouldn't be comfortable seeing him on the floor for extended lengths of time without feeling we're being overmatched out there, not at this point anyway.
Q, I understand what you mean with Hummel making a jump in his game, but I don't think you'll get a chance to see that even if he's made some smaller strides forward because we've got plenty of wings who Flip will play well before Hummel...and if Hummel is getting 5 minutes per game it's not likely to be all that noticeable.

Re: Hummel Signing
Hummel got signed for 900k. He can be a great shooter when he's not in a slump. All this means is that there is a trade coming to clear out some of the wing backlog. Hummel will be an end-of-the-bench guy that can be relied on to not screw up the game if he needs to come in.
Re: Hummel Signing
Ive said it before and il say it again, hummel is your ideal 12-15th man. He knows how to play, can play with anybody and can fit in in any lineup or situation.
You dont have to give him playing time to develop him or get him into a groove. He knows his role and when you put him in, he will play within his limits and play smart bball and gives good effort.
We do have too many wings now and flip probably has things linedup to balance the roster.

His shooting is terrible. His TS% was the same as Ricky's last season, and he is playing against other scrubs. This has no business on an NBA roster, but I guess that doesn't worry Flip. Really seems stupid to sign him at this point, or were we worried he would get snatched up.
On the upside, his shooting can't get any worse.
+1
His TS% was a tiny bit better than Dante and like you said he couldn't shoot worse. My guess Hummel can shoot he might be the best FT shooter on the team.
EDIT: Just to clarify Dante as the bar for offense is pretty low.

Re: Hummel Signing
Since when did Hummel become a stretch 4? Isn't a requirement of being a stretch 4 is the ability to shoot?

Re: Hummel Signing
I understand where the Hummel skeptics are coming from, but let me point out a few additional facts.
1. Robbie Hummel was our only bench player with a net positive on/off number. In other words, we actually performed slightly better as a team when he was in the game versus out of the game. That wasn't the case with Barea, Cunningham, Dieng, Shabazz, Shved, Turiaf, Budinger, and Mbah Moute. In every single case, except for Hummel, our team performed worse with them on the court versus off of the court. So for as horrible as some of you claim him to be, it certainly didn't affect our quality of play as a team while he was on the court. Was that just dumb luck?
2. Hummel was our 5th best rebounder, behind Love, Dieng, Turiaf, and Pekovic. Folks always seem to underestimate the value of ending possessions (defensive rebounding) and continuing possessions (offensive rebounding). Outside of Love and our Centers, he was our best rebounder folks.
3. Hummel had the lowest turnover rate on our squad last season and had nearly a 3:1 assist to turnover ratio. Unlike a lot of younger players, he actually knows what the hell he's doing out there. He averaged .5 turnovers per 36 minutes. The ability to play mistake-free basketball actually matters, yet turnovers is often overlooked as a meaningful statistical category.
4. What some of you see as someone with poor lateral movement and lack of vertical leap, I see a guy that makes good decisions, positions himself well, and fights for rebounds.
5. And we get all of this for only 900K!
His shooting efficiency was poor, but I think with more reps he will eventually be a good 3-point shooter. He's proven that at other levels of play and I have no doubt he can get there in the NBA.

lipoli390 wrote:We have only one roster spot left. Presumably, that slot is slated for GRIII. But I have a hard time believing that Flip is content to start the season with last season's roster plus our two new rookies. So if Flip ends up keeping Love, then he has to have some deals lined up that will move out a couple of our current roster players from last season. Otherwise, this deal seems to suggest that a Love-Wiggins deal is in the works and that the deal will involve moving out one or two of last year's players.
-puts on rose colored glasses-
Lip maybe Flip would be ok with bringing back last year's roster with 2 rookies. Why
2nd year players Dieng, Bazz and now even Hummel could improve especially Dieng and become much bigger factors than their rookie year
JJ, Luc and Bud had poor seasons and could reasonably bounce back
Lavine looks like he could maybe even be a factor this year GR3 won't be much worse than Jeffers Price roster spot hopefully he doesn't have to play much.
Love has a history of being better every year following a healthy season. Love could be even better this year than last.
He could maybe get more games out of Pek and Martin by managing their minutes.
Maybe Flip still has hope for Shved. -I didn't have my glasses on for this point lol-
The team does lose a solid team player rotation guy in Dante but Dieng probably can bring enough in minutes he will get I don't think we miss dante plau Luc is about as good his D is better and offense a little worse but so you really wanna see that jumper of Dante's? I don't mind it so much but yeah.
Having guys on the team actually playing together that played together last year could be significant. Flip talked about this multiple times having some of that continuity or cohesion of the organization and the roster. This team didn't have much of that going into the season last year.
Coaching Adelman is/was a great coach but probably wasn't his best because of all the factors. Flip thinks he can do a better job
So there is some legit reasons to be ok with the roster coming back.
-takes off rose colored glass-
How many of those positives from what is basically the same roster as last year with an infusion of young talent would be enough to make this team take the next step? 100% 75% 50% 35% idk but I'd say at least 50% and we might have something obviously more the better. That's not crazy but still probably a lot to ask. I would have liked to see at least one FA guy signed but if Flip is trying to keep his options open salary wise for next offseason I'm ok with that also. Its gonna be interesting to see what happens but I won't hate it if the roster is set as we have it with the exception of Shved who I have written off.

He was certainly given the green light in summer league. Not impressed.

Q, how many of those minutes were during garbage time?
