Backing out of the deal completely would screw this franchise so bad. No agent would let their players talk to us in free agency in the future. That would be shooting ourselves in the foot. Or the groin, actually.
I agree with Grey though, that Thibs' relationship with Gibson might be the sort of thing that could get us a million in wiggle room . . . if needed for a good player.
Apparently, we only have around $1 million in cap space left, so squeezing another million per year out of Gibson's contract (giving us about $2 million cap room) wouldn't significantly enhance our free agent opportunities since it's no more than the typical vet minimum. What we could potentially do is change the deal to a 3-yr, $30 million deal -- giving us about $4 million more cap room for a total of around $5 million. That could be a difference-maker for some free agents, but I think it would still come up short for CJ Miles. And we'd be stuck with another guaranteed year at $10 million for what would then be a 34 year old backup PF. Not sure what you guys think of stretching his contract to 3 years, but it seems like something Gibson might agree to if it meant making the team stronger.
That makes a lot of sense and should happen. Go on spotrac and look at the sf and sgs left. We definitely could get two decent ones with 5 mil and the RE. I highly doubt it does happen though as Taj and Teague both see,ed to agree to two years because of Butler potentially leaving in two years.
I would be very much against any deal that gives Taj a third year. Some of us who really didn't like the deal at least found it palatable in that Gibson doesn't make Thibs' 2019-20 decisions any more difficult because he will be gone. Thibs isn't an experienced GM, but he's smart...and he clearly understands the lux tax issues he already faces in 2019-20 without adding another $10 million to the pot. You only have to look at Golden State to see how big a nightmare the lux tax is...they sign Nick Young for $5 million and it cost them an additional $12 million in lux tax. Think of that...$17 million for Swaggy P!
We're stuck with the Gibson deal and it hurts us in ways other posters have documented...I at least hope Thibs doesn't make it worse by extending it.
