If we are doing one with scores, there's usually three different types:
1. Season Points - I like this one the most because it forces you to pick the best fantasy players possible and it ranks everyone over the entire course of the season to see who wins with the most points
2. Roto - Similar to Season Points but the goal is to try to be the best in every stat category during the course of the season. Then whoever wins the most stat categories at the end of the season wins.
3. Head to Head - Most people like head to head matchups. Here is why I hate it for Basketball. Head to head is good competitive wise because it faces you against a player each week. Here is the sucky part though. You could have a way better team than your opponent and still lose. How? If all your players play a total of 40 games and your opponents players play 50 games, you can lose simply because your players played less games and I hate that. I found myself losing to inferior opponents because they played more games than I did that week. The only thing that you miss with the other two that you don't with head to head is playoffs and playoffs are sweet.
That's my opinion on those types, but I gladly play whichever you choose.
