what type of tip is normal for professionals? what would be a normal, good, and bad tip?
Best tippers of pro athletes were definitely hockey players. A good tip depends on the situation of course. Contrary to what most people who have never been bartenders think, its not a matter of percentage. Shaq gave me a hundred dollars once when I waited in him at lunch. That was a good tip. KG when he was younger would make all kinds of ridiculous demands and then always leave like 25-50 dollars on like 500$ tabs. He was nice, very friendly and grateful but didnt get it. Someone must have straightened him out. Shaq had a cheeseburger, fries, a salad and a chocolate cake appetizer. We bought his lunch for him because he came in after our manager saw him out in front of the restaurant and invited him in. He was pretty cool. Of course 100 dollars for him is a drop in the bucket. But if you got it, why not spread it around a little? Doesn't mean you always have to give 100 dollars, but always under 10% is weak. Petersen was a straight up 15% guy, which in my book is for the birds.
Would be interesting to hear who the nicest NBA players you've waited on.
I dont know if you mean to imply I am being petty, but the title of the thread was "most hated." There are plenty of nice NBA players too. Fred Hoiberg was awesome. Wayne Ellington was a great guy. Barkley is cool. Dean Garrett was a really nice guy. Trent Tucker is awesome. Not a huge tipper, but a really good guy who loved to talk about the NBA. Gugliotta. (but we grew up near each other). Those are just some of the guys I met.
One of my all time favorite athletes though was Derek Boogaard. He would come in to my bar when he was just coming up. Super modest guy. Always remembered our names. Liked to just hang out at the bar and talk to the people at the bar. He would give us tickets and even gear some times. Smart guy. Was really sad when he died. Josh Harding is another great guy. I'm not a big hockey fan. I'm definitely an NBA fan. But having worked at bars near stadiums in both cities, hockey players were the coolest. Baseball players easily the worst.

Without a doubt, whether it's fair or not---I hate Josh McRoberts!!!!!!
If guys go to the Wolves game, there's a food area---the BackCourt Club--- to hang out, grab a couple of drinks and nibbles before a game. It's also an area that give you direct access to the visiting team when they are leaving the arena after their shoot around or warm ups (5:00-6:15pm on 7pm gamedays).
Kids usually line up along the rails so that they can get autographs. There was one incident that this kid---no older then 8-10 years old---ask Josh McRoberts for his autograph. But mistakenly called him Jason instead (Kapono was also on the team). No only did McRoberts decline to sign the program that are provided for free---but after walking away for 3-4 steps, came back and in a really pissy tone said.... "I'm Josh---not Jason". Remember, he said this is to a little 10 year old kid!!!! What a jerk.
The kid was so heartbroken. Honestly, it wasn't about who signed his program, it was just getting someone to sign it for him that mattered. I felt so bad for him that I was about to call my ticket rep to see if he could do anything but by the time I was going to he vanished with his grandpa. I hope the rest of this game fared out well for him. And the sad thing is----he's not even a superstar in this league!

I was in Las Vegas one time talking to an employee at a gift shop. We were talking about an NBA parlay I had going and one of the games involved Felton's current team. She was going on and on about how she and Felton were dating, and that she was looking forward to the next time he could come to town. I didn't have the heart to tell her that he probably had "dates" in every NBA city. But apparently he had her convinced that she was his only gal and she was totally smitten with the idea of her NBA boyfriend. At that point I just assumed he was a scumbag.

Although I'd have to say KG was a pathetic tipper. Nice guy, but bad tipper. I heard he has improved since 2001 or so, when I used to wait on him. Biggest jerk NBA player I ever waited on - Rashad McCants. I dont know what that prick is up to, but I hope he's unhappy.
Interesting too was when I waited on Jim Petersen back then before he was doing the games he was kind of a loser. Forgot his credit card one time, I ran out to give it back to him, and acted like I was harassing him for an autograph or something. Bad tipper too.
Would be interesting to hear who the nicest NBA players you've waited on.
KD..Hands down.

Anyone on the Lakers roster...... Their payroll is disgustingly unfair and ruins the credibility of the league.

How so? Cap limits are the same for all teams unless I'm misunderstanding what you're saying.

JR Smith.
If only because he reminds me so much of a glorified Rashad McCants, who actively tried to steal my soul for years.
[Note: It's good to read about others who discovered McCants is a horrible human being, in every way. Now, I wouldn't wish any of you the ill fortune of discovering this fact with the loss of your soul... but I do find it pleasing that more of us agree that Rashad McCants is a vile human in every way.]
