I know once free agency begins the Lakers can absorb salary. But they cannot at the draft. So you are asking the Lakers to draft a player for us, but hold off trading him to us until the summer? And this is before any discussions with Pau Gasol can even take place (well, at least over the table conversations)?

They could draft a player this year and trade him, but the other two picks couldn't happen as suggested. I would hope to get Gasol for a little cheaper than the 12mil/yr as he has had significant injuries that are longterm as well. Here is a link for future picks owed -

Tim, Lip is right about the lakers taking contracts into cap space. I think a team can always take in less in salary in any deal. The team taking in more salary must follow the guidelines set depending upon being under the cap, under the lux, or a lux tax team.

I would definitely prefer something along these lines as opposed to a complete rebuild.

That actually might be better for us that the picks are pushed further down the line now that you bring it up. Thanks for correcting me.

By that time, the future Wolves team might need extra assets to complete a big time trade if they're in contention, which they should be by 2019.

Wiggins will have had five years to establish himself as a star and still only be 24 years old. Rubio will be 28 and as good as he'll ever be, assuming we re-signed him. Waiters and McD will have had their entire rookie contracts run out by then making it clear if they need to be replaced by a prospect. This whole time the Wolves should be in a relatively nice spot in terms of cap space.

Can't lie, if it fell this way before draft time I wouldn't be upset. I'd miss Love, but I'd enjoy watching Wiggins/Parker play with Rubio and see if Dougie McBuckets could replicate Love's impact to a degree.

There are ways for it get done if both teams want it done. You do bring up worthy questions, though.

I don't see the Lakers giving up 3 unprotected picks for Love... when they have a fighting chance to wait a year and get him for "free" in free agency...

If they wait, there's a good chance they won't get him. He'll be in Chicago or Boston before that happens.

I would much prefer to re-tool by bringing in Gasol with the MLE next to Love and trade Pek for Deng.

1. Gasol's not taking the MLE.

2. Why go for Gasol if we have Love/Dieng?

1. Gasol already stated he is not after money.

2. 2 big men do not make a rotation.

I would love to get Gasol at a lower salary, but if he is taking the mle, he will likely be landing in Memphis. I think he would make them a real contender and be paired up with his brother.
