Many people want to be challenged at the highest level they can achieve. I don't know if that includes Fred, but achieving the NBA as a player tells me something...

All seriousness aside, I don't get the thought that Fred won't want to leave Iowa State. Here are all the reasons:
1) He makes $1.5 million at ISU, and Adelman is paid almost 3 times that. Tough to turn down an extra 2-3 million a year.
2) In terns of job security, Glen Taylor doesn't exactly have a quick trigger in firing people, no matter how poorly they perform (see Adelman, Rick)
3) Fred's a family guy, and would love to spend summers with his four kids. As a college coach, he needs to spend most of the summer recruiting
4) Most people aspire to the highest job they can find in their profession...that's the NBA
5) There has to be a reason Fred negotiated such a small buyout in his contract for going to the pros
6) Ames is boring. Fred has lived in Minneapolis and knows how much more interesting a community it is.
Some of those are good points.
The one I might quibble with is that Hoiberg will think Ames is boring. I live in the Twin Ciites, so I think it would be dreadfully boring. But I'm not a native son to Iowa who is revered in the community like few other people are. The guy is legitimately a sort of deity there.
Maybe that gives him more leeway to always be able to come back. Maybe it puts too much strain on things for him. Maybe he'll use the NBA to get Iowa State to up his contract into top 10 coaching salary range around $3M.
Iowa State would pay it. And he'd have to really fuck up... or hit an extended rough patch to lose it. Regardless of whether Taylor doesn't have a quick trigger or not... it's the NBA. The Wolves have had 11 coaches in 25 years... and nobody has seen it to year 4 since Flip was in charge.

I think you might be right, abe, that Fred would have better job security and might prefer to be in Ames. He grew up there and is indeed considered a god there. The other part of the equation though is the four teenagers, who were born in and grew up in the Twin Cities. I wonder how that conversation went a couple years ago: "Kids, I have great news! Pack up your stuff, say good-bye to your friends...we're leaving tomorrow for Ames! They love me there!" I can imagine the daggers he must have gotten back from the kids. Fred can back in the good graces of his kids by moving them back to their home town.
The biggest issue to me is: do we want Fred? I think we might, but I'm not sure.

Hoiberg is a young coach. And he's done an excellent job at Iowa State using NBA principles. He's already dealt with headcases like Royce White... so he even has experience dealing with GIANT egos and pains in the ass.
I think he'd have a chance to succeed in the pros.
But if I was a coach heading to the pros... I'm not sure a team like the Wolves would be my first choice. Granted, if Kevin Love stays, I like the team's chances. But if he leaves... possibly for nothing... is that what you're going to want as an NBA newbie?

Yep, that's the key issue. If Fred has some indication that Love is here for awhile, it becomes an attractive opportunity. If not, we're rebuilding again, and maybe he doesn't want that.

As a Minnesotan and a gopher I realize it is my duty to hate Iowa but if I'm looking at it from Fred's perspective here's what I'd think:
1) I've been successful for several years, a raise is coming soon.
2) The job security at Iowa St is far superior to the wolves and it's not that close
3) I'm a family guy, I'm from Ames, my wife's from Ames, and probably other extended family is still there on both sides. Also NBA travel is much worse than NCAA.
4) The NBA and NCAA and completely different, so he is at the highest level of NCAA basketball because he's coaching a men's team. Perhaps he enjoys coaching college age kids, being able to help shape their lives not coaching millionaires with crazy egos.
5) Maybe he didn't negotiate a small NBA buyout maybe Iowa St negotiated a large college buyout because they don't want him coaching a different school.
6) I've only passed through Iowa but population wise Ames is like Bloomington I believe. Also if tons of extended family still lives there it might not be as bad as you think.

Despite the Wolves gutty performance last night, the Suns, Mavs and Griz all won, officially eliminating the Wolves from playoff contention. A glance at the standings might tell you we could still tie some of those teams, but since all three teams play each other, two of them are guaranteed to win another game this season, thus the best the Wolves could possibly do is tie one of them for 9th. But even that is extremely unlikely (and unwanted!).
But our recent strong play certainly warrants continued attention, which has not been the case in recent seasons where nothing but uninspired losses piled up.
I am feeling good about the Orlando game tonight!

Maybe those games will be cancelled!
