If he is worth 20 million in year 5 for the Lakers, he would have to have a lot go wrong to not be worth 20 million starting in year 6 for us thus letting him keep the extra 3-5 million that he would lose otherwise. A third max deal is very rare in this league so he would be giving up a decent chunk of change, and yes 3-5 million dollars is a decent chunk of change because that is mid-level money. Joe Johnson is thanking the heavens right now for the 5th year because he'll be lucky if he makes half that once his deal is up. Same goes for Deron Williams. That's the risk he would be taking with the 4 years instead of 5.

Except Love will be what, 30 years old after this next max contract? I don't see his production going down as he gets older so I actually think he'll have another big payday after this one. Melo's about to be 30 years old and will get a max, why wouldn't Love?

I am not even sure what your point is here Khans. He is essentially getting an extra 3-5 mil over the five years by staying with the home team. The rest is purely speculation on the next CBA, health, etc.
Joe Johnson was overpaid on both of his big contracts to lure him away from his previous team. Deron Williams has encountered numerous injuries causing him to miss many games and limiting his athleticism. Guys like Chris Paul, Kobe, KG, TD, Lebron, Melo, and Dirk have or will be signing contracts that take them into their mid thirties.

I could have saved you all some time: I believe the sentence read "there's no advantage for Love to sign it TODAY", meaning that he might as well wait until July '15 to make up his mind.
.....or MIN could just trade him now for Eric Gordon and Bargnani.
