Last roster spots
Re: Last roster spots
Wait -- for the 15th spot? Or the 2-Way?
Another "long shot" would be converting Rocco to a standard contract. The Wolves did bring him up to the big club today, but many of us thought that would happen independent of being converted. Time for Rocco to see some garbage time!!!
Re: Last roster spots
Well, our last 2-way goes to Jules Bernard. He’s been solid for Iowa, but it seems rather anti-climatic. It would take a rash of injuries for him to ever see the light of day.
Now, about that last roster spot…
Now, about that last roster spot…
Re: Last roster spots
This is mind-boggling. Why give it to the 26 year old Bernard over Zyon Pullin?? Bernard is shooting 39% from the field and 28% from behind the arc - AS A SHOOTING GUARD! Zyon is shooting over 50% from the field and from behind the arc. His offensive stats are much better than Bernard’s across the board. Zyon is also 2 years younger than Bernard. I would think the organization should be cultivating a guy like Zyon.
Re: Last roster spots
Lip you are looking at the tip off tournament stats. Bernard is averaging 25 6 and 6 on 45% shooting and 39% from 3 on 8 attempts in 25 games.Lipoli390 wrote: ↑Wed Feb 25, 2026 11:05 pmThis is mind-boggling. I’m not arguing for one player or another just giving you his regular season stats because G league stats can be hard to find.
My guess is they don’t think either are in the long term plans. Pullin has been hurt for I believe the last 20 games. Probably just went with the guy in case of emergency this guy can hit an open 3 and not cost a roster spot like Juzang was on roster to do
Re: Last roster spots
Bernard became the team's #1 option after Pullin went down and Tristen Newton got picked up on a 2-way by Houston. I think that gave him the green light and confidence to really start excelling.kekgeek wrote: ↑Thu Feb 26, 2026 12:20 amLip you are looking at the tip off tournament stats. That being said, Pullin is the better player and is now back from his wrist injury (he's started their last two games).
While these 2-way guys that are in their mid-20s are long shots, it still feels like you want to be strategic about it and place a bet with the younger/better player. Freeman over Newton and now Bernard over Pullin are both head-scratchers.
Re: Last roster spots
When I started checking back in a few weeks ago I was pleased to see how well Pullin had played and then disappointed to see he was hurt. In looking at Bernard I did look back at his few games with the Wizards a couple years ago. The stats were actually pretty good and better than I remembered. It looks like Bernard was really packing the stat sheet at one point in February with a triple double and then another near triple doubt the next game. I'm in on Pullin but with the injury it makes sense to sign Bernard.Q-is-here wrote: ↑Thu Feb 26, 2026 7:21 amBernard became the team's #1 option after Pullin went down and Tristen Newton got picked up on a 2-way by Houston. I also think it's worth considering we have seen more players the last few years take leaps (from various levels of play) past the age of 26. Gary Payton Jr didn't become an NBA rotation player till 28. We have seen multiple guys take significant leaps from being decent NBA players to much more than that including NAW who moved from barely being in the league to rotation player to very valuable rotation player to a pretty good starter. It's worth considering that just because a guy is 26 there might actually be upside still they don't just have to be 21 or whatever. Heck Juzang turns 25 in March. Honestly Connelly seems to do better picking guys that aren't wildly young anymore so maybe I'll give him the benefit of the doubt here. It looks like March 4 is the deadline to sign 2-way guys so that might have been a factor as well.
Re: Last roster spots
But Pullin was back from injury and had already logged a couple games when Bernard was signed. He's the better player of the two.Monster wrote: ↑Fri Feb 27, 2026 6:06 pmWhen I started checking back in a few weeks ago I was pleased to see how well Pullin had played and then disappointed to see he was hurt. Re: Last roster spots
Apologies for not having been here to see more of the discussion of the gleague guys but I'm guessing you have checked out some games. As I've stated already I was a fan of Pullin coming into the season and moreso than Bernard although Bernard was a good add to the Iowa roster. Iowa has had 3 guys that exploded offensively in Pullin Newton and Bernard. Pullin has now played 14 G-league games this year. Is that enough to say how good he is or isn't? Newton is still putting up some big scoring numbers for rio grand but the 3 point and assist numbers have dropped off significantly. What if after the time off for Pullin he doesn't continue to put up those good numbers even though he has so far? What's the defense for Bernard or Pullin look like? While the difference isn't all that big Bernard is the tallest of the 3 and has the most NBA experience even if it's not a whole lot.Q-is-here wrote: ↑Fri Feb 27, 2026 7:58 pmBut Pullin was back from injury and had already logged a couple games when Bernard was signed. Another possibility is Pullin declined a 2-way deal betting on himself. This is somewhat unlikely but if he keeps putting up those offensive numbers some team might give him even a 10 day contract or an NBA contract at the end of the year with a no guaranteed 2nd year or something. It seems to me the Wolves have often prioritized adding players with some NBA experience for their 2-way deals adding guys with depth over just the most upside. Maybe they think Bernard would be the guy over Pullin that would be better playing off other players if they actually had to play him. If they really feel strongly about Pullin they could even let Freeman go and sign Pullin in the next couple days. That might be easier to do once they have Anderson signed.
As for upside...again I like Pullin but every year the Wolves all the other teams are gonna have dozens of players to choose from for 2 way players either from the draft, undrafted or guys that finished the gleague season strong or whatever. Rocco is the most intriguing 2-way player since Reid signed his initial deal before outplaying it and getting an NBA deal. As I think you know I'm a big believer in the gleague and adding players via that roster spot. You probably have a better handle on those guys than I do but just thought I would add a few thoughts from my couch.
Re: Last roster spots
So, I guess Jules Benard has been waived from his 2-way contract. I have no idea if there was some logistical thing accomplished by the signing/waiving, or what?
