Smart, mature, confident. Those are the words I’d use to describe Trey Kaufman-Renn.

It would be great to see Beringer play more, but personally, I don't think you can play him at the 4, especially with Rudy at the 5.
He is currently slated to play regularly as Rudy's backup, so right there he's in the regular rotation for at least 15+ MPG. That seems about right for a 2nd year big on a steep learning curve. Not sure who thinks he should actually play more than that (?).
Additionally, if he's paired with Lyles at times, I can actually see where Trey may defend some Centers and they put Joan on a more nimble 4 defensively. But that's just match-up dependent. In essence, Joan is a pure 5 offensively.

Regarding the whole Beringer at the 4 talker, one of the Wolves coaches said in summer league it's basically Beringer at the 4 on defense and at the 5 on offense. Basically flip flopping spots each end.

If he's playing next to Rocco, I can see that because of Rocco's ability to shoot.
I don't see that working with Rudy though. Let's hope they both show enough that it might be feasible to play them together a bit this year (without hurting us).

If Joan can actually guard 4's and do some switching onto perimeter players on defense I'm not exactly concerned with the offensive problems he and Rudy together would present themselves for like 10 minutes a game against some teams. The Wolves do have some legit shooters on the roster and good luck to some undersized teams getting a rebound or maybe even taking a shot in the paint. I'd rather get Beringer some minutes with Rudy than wring my hands about the offense while a young talent just sits on the bench and we play some other player that may not be a better player than he is and might be someone that isn't in the team's long term plans.
Now the reality is before we even get there Beringer has to show he can play at C before he can get those possibly PF minutes though. I'd like to see him make a strong case for minutes when he gets his opportunities.
Supposedly he has gotten better at putting the ball on the floor so that will be interesting to see in SL if he has more there at all.

I agree, Monster. Sometimes we over-think things when, in fact, having your best players on the floor should be the natural default. The threshold question is whether Rudy and Beringer together would be our best two players compared to whatever alternative we might pair with Rudy for certain stretches. We know what we have in Rudy, but Beringer is still an unknown.

I'm not suggesting that Trey Lyles is gonna be a super awesome starter or whatever but it could be a 2nd year in a row Connelly signed a cheap familiar face that ends up being a worthwhile contributor. Last season it was signing/resigning Bones to a partially guaranteed deal which nobody here was particularly Thrilled with. The Wolves needed some depth at PG and Bones ended up having a career year in the regular season. Lyles isn't some fringy guy he is a guy that played some solid NBA basketball for a number of seasons. I read one article from a couple years ago that his former head coach praised him for various aspects of his game including doing the right stuff on defense. That coach just won a championship with the Knicks. It's gotta suck to be a Kings fan.

Monster, I agree with your take. Lyles was a sneaky good pickup by TC. Sneaky good? Q put together a terrific list of possible PF pickups, and Trey didn't even make the list...TC does it again, doing something good that nobody could have predicted!
I agree that he's not going to be super awesome, but lining up next to the other 4 starters, he doesn't have to be...just rebound, guard, and hit the wide open three-pointer, all which he can do at an adequate level without being a star. He doesn't seem to be in the conversation to start at PF probably because he isn't one of our best five players, and Finchy seems to like starting his 5 best. But he makes the most sense to me. He allows Jaden and Ayo to settle into their best roles...starting SF and high scoring 6th man, respectively. But I wouldn't be surprised to see TC pull another rabbit out of his hat to bring in an even better option at PF.

I literally forgot about Lyles since he was out of the NBA last year. Phenom actually brought him up in the Forward Options thread, so to his credit, he sniffed him out well before the Wolves ultimately signed him. I made the mistake of not adding him to the list after Phenom mentioned his name.
Has it ever occurred to anyone that Jaden may actually do more for the defense as a 4 than as a 3? It's purely hypothetical, but we seem to act like him not being the main POA defender (and he still would be against some match ups) means he's somehow neutered defensively. It may actually be the opposite of that!
