Byron Buxton

"Extraordinarily patient..." You must not follow Lavelle Neal on Twitter. People are already pressing the panic button. Again Buxton has less than 500 ABs above AA. Good grief he is in his 2nd season of high league baseball and isn't and all star yet and yeah he is struggling at the plate but man that's not a lot of time to have figured it out. If people are seriously making a significant judgement based on that small amount of paying time well that's their problem. This is baseball guys can take time to get it figured out. 22 is still pretty young in baseball terms especially since the guy has played so little at the upper levels. This drives me crazy I realize there is reason for concern but chill out a bit here. I could probably find some player that sucked for his first 300 or so ABs before becoming a worthwhile hitter...oh wait that's sounds like Brian Dozier who is back to doing just fine at the plate thank you very much.
As for whether he should be playing in AAA or the majors that's fair question but at this point like LST said unless his confidence is getting crushed he may as well be up here playing defense and seeing what real pitching he has to adjust to instead of the lower level stuff at AAA.

It's fair to point out Buxton's age and promise. And Dozier's struggles. But we do have to acknowledge that he's been ridiculously bad at the plate thus far, without significant improvement along the way:
Buxton: 320 AB / 3 HR / 22 RBI / .203 BA / .252 OBP / .577 OPS / 121 Ks
Dozier: 316 AB / 6 HR / 33 RBI / .234 BA / .272 OBP / .603 OPS / 58 Ks

I'm fine with acknowledging the struggles. I'll point out that Buxton also has more extra base hits (28) than Dozier (18) during basically the same amount of ABs. 28 extra base hits ain't bad for a guy that struggling as bad as Buxton is with major league hitting so far in his career.

I don't want to speak to any larger problems because I don't have any easy answers, but in terms of this injury, he should go on the 15-day, with Rosario playing CF, and call up Palka to see what he does against other team's 25-man rosters.

Palka isn't on the 40 man roster.

Fair enough. But that line still screams incompetence to an alarming degree at the major league level.
That being said, his age and defense have offset that just enough to keep him in the majors. Let's hope the injury is minor and he can gain some quality at bats the rest of the season and make very real improvements in 2017.

Palka isn't on the 40 man roster.
So if they don't have him on there by "Rule-5 draft day", can they lose him?

I'm not sure but I would guess so. That's quite a ways off so I'm not worried about it right now. They could dump 5 players off the 40 man one way or another by then.

Good point. He seems like he is going to be good.

Yes, they could possibly lose him if not on the 40 man roster, depending on some complicated "timing" rules. However, they have a few spots open right now and if Palka keeps hitting, they could add him in time for a September callup. Once the season ends, they'll do more "dropping and adding", but some of those are currently in our bullpen at the major league level.
