ESPN story with @IanBegley: Knicks remain unlikely to reincorporate exiled center Joakim Noah into team under David Fizdale, still eyeing September waive-and-stretch.

Thibs is drooling about the news, he can finally get a defensive anchor on the team.

This is interesting and far from unexpected. The quote from Woj's column is interesting and might have some context for Deng's situation as well. It seems after Sept 1 the waiver and stretch would basically be for just the final year of his contract keeping his current salary for this season on the books unless I miss understood something.

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/24323522/new-york-knicks-david-fizdale-plan-part-joakim-noah

"Using the stretch provision after Aug. 31 reduces Noah's cap hit to $6.4 million, saving the team $12.9 million toward the salary cap. Stretching his contract after Sept. 1 costs the Knicks $6.4 million in cap space in the summers of 2020 and 2021.

The $18.5 million salary for 2018-19 still counts toward the Knicks' salary cap, although that number could be reduced if a buyout is agreed upon with Noah, or if New York doesn't waive the set-off in his contract."

I've said it before but Noah for the vet min...sure it's worth a gamble. It's a pretty low risk move. Same with Deng.

With nunally being only a second year guy, his vet minimum is lower than if we signed a guy like brewer to the vet minimum.

Because of that, i think we can sign both deng and noah while staying under the cap.

Am i giving thibs too much credit?

Yes. Just because a move might be a low risk move doesn't mean it isn't a dumb move.

I'm not sure about the cap impact, but I don't think the Wolves will fill all 15 roster spots before the season starts. Like last season, they'll want to keep one spot open for later in the season. That means there's one more roster spot to fill after signing Nunnaly. I think it will be either Noah or Deng, but not both. Assuming we have a choice (both are available and would agree to sign here), I'd choose Noah if he's healthy. I like his interior defense, passing, shot-blocking and intensity.

They had that space for those 2 contracts before the savings (relatively speaking) of Nunnally. It does give them some more wiggle room like if they want to give some guy some non-guaranteed money to get him here or even little sweetener to get a guy to camp and then to the Iowa Wolves as an affiliate player.

Would the Wolves sign both Noah and Deng of given the opportunity? Honestly I think if Thibs thought both were healthy and could play and they would sign up for the vet min and whatever role might be here...yeah I think they sign both. If it's not working out they could always be let go one way or another. Thibs and Layden will have more info on these guys than we will so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt even though there will be understandably jokes about getting the band back together. I think for either guy if some other team offers a more legit role than what the Wolves would offer that could keep them from coming here. I don't know what team/teams would do that though and I'm not really gonna look through the rosters until something more definitive happens. Regardless I think this may put the Wolves in a serious holding pattern for a while unless somebody really enticing wants to sign. I don't know who that would be though. Lol

I'm a fan of Noah anchoring the second unit because they are gonna have defensive issues as constructed. I don't really see a spot for Deng here. He doesn't fit any role outside of veteran leader who knows the system. That's not enough to bring him in unless he's ok with not playing much if at all and really just being a help in practice and mentoring.

Well...Deng did a great job of that role last year with the Lakers!!! I'd bring him in to mentor and convince Thibs to play the young guys like he did with Butler. :) I tend to agree that espcially if Noah was signed at see less of a role for him here. It seems like some sort of shot creator would make more sense with guys like Butler and Rose injury risks.

Bazzy back to the bucks.

He really needs to sue his former agent or something. He turned down a 4/40 extension to just fight for a minimum contract.

Crawford still unsigned though.

Crawford was our first wing off the bench and was given quite a bit of rope to run the offense, yet he wasn't real happy with his minutes. He did us a big favor leaving (only to be replaced by Rose - doh!), but if he truly thought he was going to get more minutes elsewhere, it's not looking too good for him.
