We would have approx. 40 mill coming off the books next year (also Gordon and tucker could of had value) and 11 1st round picks total in the next 7 years.
I get thibs had to save his job but this was obviously the best move and we only have Cov and Culver to show for it
Wait. I don't remember Tucker and Gordon being part of that deal...
Pretty sure it was just 4 picks spread out over the course of many years
Yeah. That's what I thought, too.
And I wasn't for that sort of trade. Draft picks don't excite me at this point... 30 years is enough.
Gordon for sure was involved because the rockets didn't have cap space to take butler with just picks. Lip was against the trade at the time because he didn't like Gordon because he was struggling at the time
That's why I remember it.
If course it could of been the protections that might of been a problem

Getting DLO costs the warriors 2 1st round picks including a lightly protected 1st in 2024

I'm not sold on a league where how well a player recruits his friends is THAT important to a franchise. Sadly, this is where we are... and more and more people are lapping it up. Next season, let's say KAT goes for 29/14/5 with 54/42/86 splits... and gets blocked from an All NBA team in favor of a 4th option for a super team while being dismissed as a "loser"... at least we'll know it's because he's a loser as a recruiter.
My bad. I expected KAT to take some responsibility for our failure to get Russell given he spent all day yesterday with him trying to convince him to come to MN. Turns out KAT has never done anything wrong. I forgot that he can't be accountable for anything as long as he scores points and grabs rebounds. It's worked out beautifully for us so far just pampering him and crowning him the next big thing in the game. I should just be polite and get back in my chair. This is fine. Literally all of the other top players in the league are manipulating the system to get where they want and to play with who they want, but god forbid our superstar be expected to do the same thing for us. Nope. In MN we're just happy to have him and it's up to everyone else to make it work around him.
We're literally in the player empowerment era and yet somehow only in MN it's all on the front office and the players get by scot free as if they have no power in any of this.
You realize that we're still an afterthought NBA city, right? A hockey town... where it's super cold... with an embarrassing history of ineptitude... and no tax advantages... or fun big city nightlife vibe... or huge endorsement opportunities... or even a legit Top Ten NBA talent.
KAT simply doesn't have enough clout yet to effectively compete with MVPs and other All Stars around the league... even if that was what was expected of him. You, like many others, expect that of him. Fair enough. It's the name of the game in 2019 for the NBA.
I acknowledged that. Doesn't mean I dig it. I think the NBA is heading down a dangerous path with "player empowerment"... at the expense of the "fan loyalty experience." I'm also well aware I might be firmly in the minority on this take.

I don't really know either way if all this movement and player empowerment is good or not. Fans seems to be following players these days more than teams and basketball has never been more popular and it's almost a year long news cycle now because of this system. I'm curious what you believe the negatives are for this type of environment that make it a dangerous path. I don't think gate revenue means the same anymore like it used to with these new billion dollar tv deals. I saw an article that the Grizzlies made less than a million a game which doesn't even cover their team salary if you stretch that out over 82 games while the Warriors make a couple million a game which more than covers any luxury tax they would pay. It seems like small markets are heavily relying on the TV deals as is.

1) It's great for business. Obviously.
2) It's bad for me. I'm less invested in a team if I have little to no investment in the players. Again, I acknowledge I'm probably in the minority. And the NBA isn't growing by attracting hoops heads like me. They're banking on me digging the game enough to be there. If not... who cares. There are dozens of people flocking to Twitter to catch up on gossip to every one of me out there. Is that sustainable in the end... or will those casual "basketball" fans chase a shinier, fluffier tail in the end? We'll see.

Abe, I've never been more closely aligned with you on an issue. But I think in a way the NBA has been catering to the casual fan for decades. Certainly more than any other sport. It is so much easier to win in some markets. Somehow baseball has managed to evolve to the point where every franchise can make an occasional run. I don't see that with the NBA. I think it was a flat out miracle that Milwaukee and Toronto were in the East finals this year. The Bucks roster is already worse than it was in May, and Toronto may soon join them.
