There is "no chance" Russell Westbrook will do a renegotiation or extension of his contract, according to David Aldridge of NBA.com.
Uh Oh. A bad day for OKC fans just got worse.

Yeah, well, it was NOT a statement that Westbrook will bolt. Just that from a financial standpoint, it only makes sense to sign an extension next season when the cap is higher instead of doing the extension this season when starting salary will be less.
But it does put OKC in quite a bind. It used to be you could be assured of at least a sign and trade (like with Love), but so many teams will have room for max contract that they could lose him for nothing.
I wouldn't mind seeing Westbrook go out East...

You wont see an extension because it is based on the lower salary. It doesn't reset to the larger cap number. He has to opt out first, and then re-sign to get the bigger dollars. It really doesn't say anything about his intentions.

OK. Well, some of the sportswriters are painting a dire picture in which OKC needs to trade Westbrook now. Westbrook may be fine reupping in OKC. The fear for OKC is the Lakers with all their capspace will swoop him up next year for nothing.

Up put the odds of Westbrook resigning with OKC at 0.1 out of infinity. My expectation was that Durant would resign with OKC on a 1+1, yes for the added pay, but also because there was no way Westbrook stayed and Durant would want out when he left.
I'll still be surprised if LA doesn't try to work out a trade of Russell for Westbrook.

I would want Ingram and Russell. Or I would want Isaiah Thomas, Crowder, Brown, and the Brooklyn picks. If Kevin Love got what he got, Westbrook should fetch more.

They can want whatever they want, but my money says Westbrook signs with LA next offseason leaving OKC empty handed if no trade is worked out before the deadline. I know the Wolves bucked the trend of teams getting less than value when trading a star player, I'll be shocked to see OKC do so also.
Edit: One advantage the Wolves had was Lebron wanting to build his super team in Cleveland which gave Flip leverage to extract good value. I don't see that situation developing currently for OKC.

Don't rule out the Knicks either. These guys like joining other stars and Melo is a bigger name than anything the Lakers have and Porzingas is a better prospect than anything the Lakers have. Clarkson, Russell, Ingram, Randle looks nice on paper, but they're young and unproven. At least the Knicks have Melo in addition to a young stud like Porzingas.

Boston won't be afraid to make their best offer for Westbrook even without any assurances from him.

The Lakers have struck out big time getting their big name guy. Teams like Boston, LA, Dallas want a superstar to build around. There will be plenty of teams making that trade to get Westbrook now.
