As I've mentioned before, the last thing this team needs is some lottery pick to come in and go through potty training the next two or three years. I've seen enough of that to last me a lifetime. It also adds further fuel to the "we're young, be patient" narrative, which I'm also tired of. I'm hoping we take the best prospect available and swiftly shop the hell out of him.
WON'T BE FOOLED AGAIN!
I'm reading the book "Boys Among Men" which was highly recommended by a couple posters a few months ago. The bottom line is there will be really good players available when the Wolves pick and they shouldn't pass up one of those guys because that player and this team is too young.
Really good players like Kris Dunn, Derrick Williams, Jonny Flynn, Wes Johnson, Randy Foye, Corey Brewer, Rashaad McCants you mean?
The fact is we don't know if any of the good college players will turn out to be good pro players. And I don't have the patience to find out.
Why is trading the pick (after we make it) not a viable option? Let some other team that needs to re-build assume the risk.

Who do we trade the pick for? I don't see us getting a game changer with 5-12th pick. Not likely we would get anyone better than someone we could just sign as a free agent without giving up anyone.

Lots of options....
- Trade it for a vet AND sign free agents where needed. We need more than one new player next season!
- Package it with an existing player in a bigger deal to get a strong vet in.
- Trade down for a pick or two that doesn't need playing time and we can grow in the D-league, something that lottery picks don't want or expect to do (same with their agents).
- Trade it for a future pick or two.
My main objective is this: I want ZERO rookies among our top 10-12 man rotation next season. ZERO!!!

I like your ideas. But we have to remember this is the MN Timberwolves we are talking about. Any choice they make will be the wrong choice. The last time they traded a 1st round pick, it was for Adrian Payne. The only possible way it can work going forward is the make decisions by writing down what they want to do and then do the exact opposite of that.
Either/Or --- which one fits better next to KAT? (from SB Nation)
9) Minnesota Timberwolves - Lauri Markkanen, PF, Arizona
Markkanen has an elite skill as a three-point shooter and he does it at 7-feet tall. His release is quick, his stroke is beautiful, and he's proven he can combine volume (4.4 attempts per game) with efficiency (43.3 percent from deep). There are questions about his defense, but that's why his good buddy Karl-Anthony Towns is around.
This would give Andrew Wiggins, Zach LaVine, Ricky Rubio, and Kris Dunn an ocean of space to play in. Could be fun.
13) Chicago Bulls - Robert Williams, PF, Texas A&M
The Bulls talked all summer about getting younger and more athletic, yet somehow only got older and slower. Assuming the front office is serious about adding athletes this year, they can't do better than Robert Williams. The 6'9 big man gets off the ground quicker and higher than anyone in this class. He could be an elite shot blocker and an above-the-rim finisher as a roll man.
This draft has too much talent and a mid-lottery pick is too cheap to just swap for a vet. Sign vets and develop young guys. We can't just cut off the pipeline because we need to make the playoffs next year. Approach it like the Celtics. Get as many good assets as you can and let the right deal come and I wouldn't trade a lottery pick in this draft for anything less than a 30+ MPG starter on a 2+ year deal.
Also I wouldn't touch that Arizona big with a 10 ft pole after watching him last night. All he can do is shoot. That's not enough to pick in the lottery.

I'm with you Kahns. What good teams trade lottery picks for a vets? Good teams find and draft good players. Look at what OKC has done the last few years. If the people running this franchise can't find legit rotation players with 1st round picks then that's very bad news. I would be interested in Q's idea of trading back though depending on how I feel once so start digging draped into these prospects.
I didn't see much of that big shooter and...yeah I'm not impressed either. Is he better than Henry Ellenson who went to the Pistons at 18 last year? I'm not sure I would go so far as not take him but yeah.

Positives
Strong, physical big man
Explosive leaper
Solid rebounder
Good shot blocker
Finishes above the rim
Excellent running the floor in transition
Motor
Can guard multiple positions
Negatives
Basketball IQ still emerging
Needs to develop a perimeter game
Tweener
I was curious about him too but he has looked really raw and kinda terrible so far tonight. The UCLA bigger players have looked better.
