The immigration thing is a concern, but I think part of it is how we handle it. We do have a finite amount of natural resources, but we can improve. I am very much in favor of removing immigrants that are trouble makers and criminals. I feel we need less tolerance in that regard. The most pressing thing is we need to do a better job of recruiting and keeping people with knowledge skills. Keep bringing those gifted students here and keep them.
Good post Bleed and I think Cool brings up a fair consideration. Here are some random thoughts:
To me immigration is something that needs a pretty big overhaul. I think everyone agrees with that. To me the unfortunate thing is that it's basically another one of those sort of so called hot button issues that each side has their ideas and nobody seems to want to give in. Meanwhile nothing gets better and even possibly some things most people on both sides would actually agree on could be implemented aren't.
I think it's always worth remembering that this country is filled with immigrants as there is a very low percentage of people that are native to the country in terms of their actual ancestry.
A former teacher and colleague said his personal professional criteria for students in the school he taught in was basic citizenship. Are they treating people reasonably well, doing something to help the people around then or are they basically hurting the community more than they are helping? If at some point they demonstrate over time they aren't good citizens then it is likely time for them to move on.
I think there are people that have entered the country illegally that are meeting good citizenship standards including paying taxes. I don't see a reason that they need to go back if they are positively contributing to their community. Does this create an incentive to come into the country in any way and hopefully make it work? Yes absolutely it does. At what point does someone who is already here deserve to benefit from meritocracy while the community around them benefits as well?
Just to be clear I am not advocating for allowing everyone to come in to the country. Like I said the incentive to come here can be increased depending on policy but for some people it's going to be pretty high regardless. Some people are in REALLY bad situations fearing for their lives. The US certainly can't take everyone though.
