DeAndre Jordan didn't have much better rebounding numbers than Cauley-Stein in college, and somehow he's a league leader in that category in the NBA.
He doesn't need to be that, though. His value comes in how terrific his defense is, both man and team. And it's a trait that has been consistent. That's where he gets his props.
DeAndre Jordan only played one year in college and wasn't fully physically developed yet. And he was a better rebounder as a freshman than WCS ever was in his three years at Kentucky, so I'm not sure that's the best example.
I agree that his value lies in his defense. My point is that whoever drafts him better be pretty damn sure that he will be elite in this area, because his offense and rebounding are almost guaranteed to be limited. I'd probably start thinking about him at #6 or 7 (which is looking increasingly unlikely for us given how horrible we've been playing lately. Yay I guess?).

If I'm going by what I think your list is: Okafor, Towns, Russell, Winslow, Hezonja...? Those are the only guys you have basically co-signed on.
I'd probably have Mudiay in that mix too. I don't have a specific order in mind, but here are my mini-tiers (again, in no particular order within the tier):
Tier I
Okafor
Towns
Tier II
Russell
Tier III
Mudiay
Winslow
Hezonja
Tier IV
Cauley-Stein
Poeltl
Johnson
One option for us is if we draft 3rd and Okafor and Towns are gone is to trade down in the draft to nab Cauley-Stein or Poeltl + another asset (may be a future protected 1st to make up for the Payne bungle?). There might be a team in the latter half of the lottery that really covets Russell or Mudiay and would be willing to trade up for one of them.
I have zero hope that we will land either Okafor or Towns, regardless of Flip's success at tanking.

Yeah, these tiers are a pretty good depiction of my thoughts too, although I still have a lot of hope (based on the percentages) we will land someone in Tier 1. I had a big crush on Johnson most of the year, but I have moved away from him.
I showed in the TOM thread that the single most probably outcome (about 33% chance) is that we draft 4th, which likely moves us into that third tier of Mudiay, Hezonja, and Winslow. In that case, I would hope that Flip would pursue all opportunities to trade down.

Unless we can get some great young veteran for the 4th pick, I think I would sit and pick Winslow.
I'm really starting to think this Winslow kid is going to be a James Harden clone as he progresses. Like everyone else here, I think it'd be great to get a big, because ultimately that's our biggest weakness and what will help the team turn the corner quicker...but this kid could become really good.
