NBA kickoff tonight. I love the NBA predictions every year, they tell us the 7 or 8 teams that are relevant and that we should ignore the rest of the league, never quite an all-inclusive season preview. "Ok, others, we won't be showing any of your games, maybe next year."

That being said I would be excited about any young player that the Wolves would have drafted #1. So in a sense part of me jumped ship on Okafor already because I am a fan of the much more than any individual player. Do I believe that right now Towns is clearly better than Okafor? Not in any way, and agree with Khans that it is way to early to tell who the best player of that draft is. But I do hope that he Towns runs away with becoming better because he plays on the team I love. I really have no personal stake in my draft preference or in retroactively being right. I just want the Wolves to start winning.

Towns being the best player in this draft class would be the best thing moving forward. That would mean we made the right decision. I hope we made the right decision. I'm just not ready to declare it already. I would rather be wrong and the team does well than be right and the team suffers, but I'm also not going to just jump ship on my prediction either because we have to be accountable for those as well good or bad.

I am not worried about Towns becoming the best player in the draft, but more that he becomes a very good player period. I think Towns has the highest upside of the bunch, and hope that he gets closer to his ceiling. Doesn't matter to me whether Okafor or Russell turn out to be better players.

I don't know how many listened to Hartman's show with Taylor, Izzo, and others, but in one of the segments (I think it was with Izzo) Chad mentioned that Flip's vision was to have Ryan coaching the wolves in 4-5 years. I can't help wonder if that had something to do with not hiring a different coach this summer. Clearly he didn't see Sam as the guy going forward.

I think Towns upside is Marc Gasol with 3 point range. I would be very happy with that. Wiggins is tougher to be like Jimmy Bulter or Paul George. Not sure he will be the rebounder that Geroge is though.

I heard that and thought that was a selfish vision. As a parent I probably would have told Ryan to stay out of the business. Spend more time with your family and make the most of it. The big league coaching game is not all it is cracked up to be and you won't need the money.

These guys know Flip better than me so maybe Ryan taking over down the road was the plan and maybe Flip genuinely saw something in Ryan that said he is the guy for that but it just seems odd to me to a certain extent. JVG and Izzo both had good things to say about Ryan so that's a good thing I guess. I do think there is plenty of evidence to say he is a good assistant coach. I don't know about beyond that I am pretty skeptical.

I'd guess I didn't understand Flip's original stance of wanting to find a better coach than himself before hiring someone new, but then would be willing to take on a guy with no HC experience (regardless of that being his son). I have no issues hiring on a younger guy, but Hoiberg sure seems like the guy we should have been chasing, and Fred says we really showed no interest at all.

Should be an interesting 2016 summer!

I see that Gasol comp too in a way. I won't be shocked if Towns is the top center in the league around year 3. Cousins could be a guy that keeps that from happening he is quite the talent and I think has more to offer defensively than he is given credit for.

A number of us here, including me, said that Flip's plan was to make Ryan the head coach in the near future and that's why he wasn't pursuing HC candidates that aggressively. That plan likely would have been poor for the franchise, though. Ryan doesn't strike me as the good HC type, more of a good assistant in the future.

I think that any parent would over value his son and want him to be head coach, and I'm sure that was Flip's wish. But I'm not on board with the narrative that he wasn't pursuing other coaches. The offer we now know he made to Izzo, and the offer that was about to be made to Joerger if Memphis hadn't preempted it negates this narrative. Flip wouldn't have endorsed these guys to Glen if his plan was for Ryan to succeed him.

Now, if the question is was Flip happy when Izzo and Joerger turned him down, I would guess the answer is yes. He wanted to coach this team.
