Collins might be a better fit long term as a bench guy basically inverting him and Naz. I don't think Collins is gonna get a ton of money on his next contract. Speaking of which...is Collins even gonna be a starter going or anything forward? Has he played well enough in this half season in Utah and wherever he is next season to be considered a starter? What of he is more of a 10 million a year type guy? I just don't know what his value is around the league and ultimately on the court. His numbers are solid this year but how bad is his D? In the past he always had some issues with BBIQ on offense. Atlanta kinda dumped him. The Kings have reportedly shown interest. Again I wouldn't be opposed to a Randle for Collins deal but it's not something to get excited about.

Interesting thoughts and good questions, Monster.

I think Collins is being way under valued here. The biggest knock on him for his current salary would be he is not a high-usage alpha dog, ala Randle. And I might give pause to some of his injury history. But he has been a very solid starting player for 6 years in Atlanta, making the playoffs 3 times, and enjoying a run to the Eastern Conference Finals one year. He is only 27, an adequate rebounder and hitting .446 of his 3s. If it works out with the Wolves, he could sign opt-out of his player option and sign an extension, possibly at a lower number than the 26.58 mil he is currently scheduled to make. I would be excited if a Randle/Collins swap came to fruition.

I believe moving Randle is the correct move for the Ant led Wolves with Rudy in the middle. Randle isn't DLo. Randle has been All Pro and an all star. He just doesn't fit with this team. Since TC traded KATs contract, we need to take the view that we need to move Randle' contact, and not dump a good player. Changing personnel happens to every team in every league and sport. Are we reshuffling the chairs on the Titanic like in years past? No. But I take the long view that TC is thinking about the next 2 years with the moves he has made so far. If he can move Randle for salary savings, and POSSIBLY bring back a serviceable player, it can only help the Wolves get back to contention next year. I truly think that the bigger issue is coaching right now, specificallythe offense and out of bound plays. Phil Jackson was a good coach that didn't win championships until Tex ran the offense. Could Finch find an assistant coach that he would listen to that could unlock this team?

I'm going to continue to play devil's advocate on moving Randle. Part of my take is because I actually would like to keep him. But also, I sense Finchie really wants to keep him, and I don't want posters here to be on suicide watch if a deal doesn't happen.
I think there were valid opinions here as to why Ju is a bad fit. He is ball-dominant on offense, and that could take shots away from Ant. And he sometimes has appeared lazy or ineffective on defense. I understand both of these takes.
But it appears our offense is finally starting to click, despite losing one of our best 3-point shooters to injury. I mentioned yesterday that we were averaging almost 117 points per game the past 10 games, and our 115 last night despite 30% shooting from Ju and Ant tells me this offense is working. League average this year is south of 112, so the recent results are very promising. I think the comfort level both Ju and Ant are with finding open teammates when they are doubled is a big reason for our resurgence. Some might argue our sub 110 point performance for the first 30 games of the season is a more compelling argument that our offense isn't working than the recent 11 game spurt. But I would argue it takes time to incorporate high usage players like Donte and Ju into our offense, and recent results are more relevant.
Randle can also be maddening on defense at times...he's certainly not Jaden, NAW or Ant in covering the perimeter. But I've seen great improvement in his defense in the past couple weeks...more hustle and intensity. But more importantly, it looks like Finchie has figured out Ju is a better option than Naz guarding centers when Rudy is off the floor. It was impressive how he bodied up Gafford last night, and this isn't the first time I have noticed it.
If TC can move Randle in a deal that clearly makes us better, or clearly sets us up to be better next season, I would not be opposed. Gotta keep the Detroit pick though. Otherwise, my position is to stay the course.

All good points, FNG. I have noticed the defensive improvement as well, and worry about who is going to body up some of the bigger players if we lose Randle.
I don't have a problem embracing this team with Randle for the rest of the season. But I also see so many signs that moving on from Randle might be best, and could very well happen. This is why I am currently in the Wilderness for 8 more games. I just don't know what TC is going to do. But I'll be ready to rock-and-roll once we get past Feb 6th. With or without Ju.

I don't care about the Detroit pick, other than I don't want it to just be used as incentive to move Randle. There are so many intriguing players out there. Look at Miami - a team who is trying to accumulate #1 picks - I'd move Randle and the Detroit pick for either Jaquez or Kel'lel Ware. Or send the pick back to Detroit along with Randle for Jalen Duren. There are numerous options.

I have often wondered if there was a way to get Capela onto the Wolves. He was recently moved to the bench in Atlanta -- to develop their younger C, I assume. Atlanta is reportedly open to moving him. He has a 22 mil expiring contract. A tag team of Rudy and Capela would really help our defensive consistency. Much like the year in Utah when Rudy and Whiteside were a tag team.
Anyway, I haven't figure out a trade that would make sense. Only that he is available and could be another avenue TC could pursue...

I'm with Tim with Collins possibly being underrated.
18.1 ppg
8.4 reb
2.5 apg
53% fg / 45% 3fg / 87% ft
... in less than 30 mpg.
Even though his three-point shooting seems more like a fluke (36.5% for career)... Collins has playoff experience. But it could come down to him being a lesser player... but a better fit? I don't know. He takes fewer threes than Randle does. The lane might still be clogged.
________
Heck, this franchise mortgaged nearly everything for Joe Smith. I see similarities... only Collins has better stats and a more successful track record.
A lot of the reason for Collins becoming an afterthought in Atlanta was his three-point regression. He had surgery or something and one of his fingers was huge and sort of deformed. I don't know if it's now fixed or he's just learn to adapt to it... but he's a very valuable offensive weapon if he can hit those threes.

Randle isn't the answer but if you moved him for Collins then other than Ant who is creating offense on this roster? Dillingham? A pass the ball all over the floor team to get open looks? Maybe especially if DVV ever returns but Randle as a player has some positives that shouldn't be overlooked just like Collins has some positives as well if he was acquired.
FWIW if I could deal Randle for basically nothing (while not giving up any legit assets) and therefore be sure not to have to pay him next season I would do it and live with whatever happened the rest of the season. That would likely include getting some minutes for younger players.
Looking around the league one positive I see is there are a number of teams with salaries of players that could make deals with higher cost players like Randle and Butler work. Sometimes in the past there was a more limited amount of players/salaries teams would be willing to move or they had lengthy contracts that would be less likely for another team to want to take on. I tend to think Connelly might make some sort of small deal partly because there might be a bunch of guys available to be moved in bigger deals but I'm not really getting my hopes up for anything.
