Just read that any new owner would be faced with a whopping $50M penalty for breaking the Target Center lease.

I mean what sane man would dare pay $1.250,000,000 for a team that he could have had for only $1,200,000,000?

This is likely been a very big factor in why Glen has held onto the team as long as he has. This is another reason why Flip coming back on and having a really small piece of ownership And running the basketball ops was somewhat significant. Flip's idea of Bringing back KG probably had merit beyond basketball. Flip was basically laying the groundwork for keeping the franchise here in whatever glory it was and could be. Idk if that would have led to some awesome championship level franchise but I think we would have seen one that was at worst mediocre (On the court) and reasonably well run organization...which would have been a big step up from the previous 10 plus years.

If this organization actually has success the first couple years I think they wouldn't try and move it. But if it's basically more of what we have seen the past 15 years...yeah it may not stay. The clock is ticking in a bunch of ways now quite possibly.

Glen has held out this long based on his desire to keep the team in MN. So I don't see him giving in now. Whoever buys the team will have to give Glen both a verbal and contractual assurance that they'll keep the team in MN. Glen will require the buyer to look him in the eye and promise not to move the team. So a buyer will have to lie to Glen if they take the team elsewhere. More importantly, Glen can build a penalty into the contract that requires far more than $50 million from the buyer if the buyer takes the team to another state. He can do that by selling the team for, let's say, 1 billion, but with an extra $500 million payable to Glen (or his estate) if the team is relocated in the next 15 years. In other words, Glen would be offering a discounted price contingent upon keeping the team in MN.

Furthermore, the NBA will resist any effort to move the team to Seattle for two reasons. First, the League will be reluctant to lose a team in the Nation's 15th biggest media market. Second, because of the huge expansion fees payable by incoming teams, the League would be much better off financially by expanding into Seattle (and Vegas) with two new teams than by allowing the Wolves to move to Seattle or Vegas.

So I'm more worried about the quality of the new ownership than about where the owner might move the team.

I was really disappointed to hear the Wilfs aren't interested. KG + a bunch of behind-the-scenes rich guys I don't see as all that much better than Glen. KG seems like the type of guy that would be a horrible owner.

I was thinking the same thing Abe and regardless I got a laugh out of it. :)

I think Lip makes a good point the NBA if things can get back to normal after the pandemic are likely more interested in expanding than moving out of MN. Wasn't there some talk about the Kings getting moved to Seattle at one point not too long ago?
