If I recall (and I'm not going back to any articles to rehash my recollection in case I'm wrong), but Beasley was part of the part 2 to the Covington trade. I believe the Wolves gave up a #17 or so pick for Beasley to be added into the multi-way deal, and Denver was willing to part with him because he turned down the extension and they probably wouldn't have been able to extend him otherwise. I 'think' the pick wasn't the Wolves pick, but rather one they were otherwise going to be receiving back as part of the Covington trade.

Don't quote me, but that's how I remember it.

Ok. That sounds vaguely familiar. Maybe Cam can give the details

Malik Beasley will be back. Minnesota gave up a first-round pick for him. He'll just be back with a damaged reputation and at a much lower cost monetarily. Whether or not the Wolves decide to keep him for the long-term is a completely different conversation.

What first round pick did we give up. I thought we got him in exchange for Covington. As for whether we keep him, I agree that's a separate question for down the road. My thought is that the Wolves should keep him without assuming he'll be here long term. In fact, they should think short term with him unless they see a real transformation in him. To do the things he apparently has done (and those are just what we know about), suggests deep character flaws that will eventually drive him out of the League. He'll probably need a transformational experience where he's so low that he's highly motivated to fundamentally change. The slap on the wrist I suspect he's about to get from our judicial system probably won't be motivation enough.

Denver received a first round pick from Houston #22 I think it's safe to assume we could have received that instead of Beasley. Maybe Juancho was a bit of that value of the pick as well.

How valuable that pick would be for this draft since the Wolves already have 3 of the top 33 picks could be debated. It would give them plenty of value if they wanted to move up etc. At this point I'd certainly rather have that pick than Beasley but until a few days ago I was pretty happy having Beasley. It's not certain that pick would bring value to the organization either. Even the good organizations don't hit on every pick in that range so there are various percentages to be played. At this point even though I think there is a chance Beasley is in a very bad place and might never get out of it I don't think the chances of him being OJ Mayo etc are very high. There is a still a chance getting Beasley in that trade provides value to them in one way or another. Juancho might not be kept but I do still think if he does especially at an appropriate salary he could provide value too...even if it's unlikely. The good teams get some of these things right. We will see if the Wolves can be one of those teams. I'd feel a lot more confident if Juancho was actually proven as a 3 point shooter...but if he was he would probably be a lot more expensive.

No question in my mind that Beasley was a much better option than the #22 pick when the deal was done, unless the Wolves front office knew or had reason to know that Beasley was messed up between his ears. Of course, we now know about those issues with Beasley and I would gladly trade him for this year's #22 pick. My purpose would not be to take and keep another rookie. I'd like that pick as an asset to combine with #17 (and perhaps #33) to move up and potentially get another top 10 pick like Vassell.

We also got Vanderbilt and Turner's expiring in that trade.

So RoCo, Vonleh, KBD, Napier, Bell for Beasley, Juancho, Turner, Vanderbilt, #17.

If you cut out Denver, Wolves wind up with Turner, 17 and 22.

I take Beasley (though he has proved to be an idiot), Juancho, and Vanderbilt over 22 every time and whatever other of those lesser players we would get to keep.

Though, depending on Beasley, in hindsight I may just have kept RoCo. Then look to move him this next year for a 2021 1st.
