Re: Official 2016 Offseasont Thread (Free Agents/Trades/Front Office Moves)
I would approach the offseason like the Spurs and Blazers would. Go for a core player like the Spurs did with LA. If you can't land one you add players on the cheap that you think can grow with what we have. I would be willing to go overboard on a RFA that we like for the MAX. Just would want to do it for 2 years with a 3rd year team option.

I like but expect Mahinmi and Biyombo to get paid pretty well. I am not sure if Noah is a cheap option, but hopefully he would be for us with Thibs as the lure.
Roy Hibbert might also be a cheap option since his career has gone south. Does anyone think Thibs could rekindle that defensive fire he used to display?
If we can get a good player at a relative bargain salary, I'd like to target some of these guy. In no case do I want to overpay for anyone.
Portland locked Ed Davis down last offseason with a 3 year deal so he isn't not a FA. There are plenty of options though in varying price brackets skill levels though as you have kinda outlined here.
Hibbert idk what to think about that guy. I think he will end up coming very cheap. He was in both a great opportunity with the Lakers but also in a likely poor situation to have his talents shown. Still the fact that he was so underwhelming makes me pause. Is he the next Kendrick Perkins type a useful center that just drops off the map and essentially becomes unplayable or does he find himself a bit and be useful? The league is different right now Hibbert will have times he will be unplayable like Asik. I might rather go with a Jon Leuer type and make a big try and keep up with him while giving up some girth than take Hibbert just because he is big etc.

I would consider Roy Hibbert on the cheap. Below is a good read. His game just has its spots.

The link didn't work but I am pretty sure ai read the article. It was a solid breakdown.
I've always sort of pulled for Hibbert but how many spots are there really to use him? Thibs is a good coach so it's possible he could get something out of him but I'm trying to think of matchups other than Andre Drummond where Hivbert is really going to help this team more than a more mobile skilled guy. Hibbert has ALWAYS been a flawed player and now those issues are even more of a problem some of which was outlined by the article. Like I said before is Hibbert going to be able to find his spots or turn into Kendrick Perkins who seems to be nearly useless and you could argue that a few years ago he was better at being complimentary center than Hibbert was. He played D rebounded and when he got the ball in scoring position he finished at a high FG%.
Having said all that If Hibbert is a good guy it's hard not to want to take a shot at him because I think he is gonna come dirt cheap closer to the vet Min than to say 5 million. It's crazy but that's what I see happening. Normally I would say the Mavs would be a team that would get him and get something out of him but hey we have a really good coach maybe it's us that can do that type of thing. The Spurs would be another interesting fit with his buddy David West if Boban leaves for more money.

Interesting to think of him going to the Spurs. I just hope we don't overspend on someone this off-season on a long-term contract.

Thibodeau: "Colangelo, it's me, Thibs."
Colangelo: "How's it going Uncle Thibs!?"
Thibodeau: "Yeah, listen, I'll give you my pick and Adreian Payne for Nerlens Noel."
Colangelo: "Oh, I don't know about that. We have high hopes for Nerl--"
Thibodeau: "Do it. C'mon. Do it. Pop it. C'mon. Do it."
Colangelo: *laughs* "You're really funny, Thibs. You're a funny guy."
Thibodeau: "What do you mean, you mean the way I talk? What?"
Thibodeau: "He's a big boy, he knows what he said. What did ya say? Funny how?
Colangelo: "Just... ya know... you're funny."
Thibodeau: "I make you laugh, I'm here to fuckin amuse you? What do you mean funny, funny how?"
Colangelo: "Know what? Deal. Take Nerlens."

A few things
1. "Uncle Thibs"?
2. If Noel, with his recent production and current contract parameters, were inserted into this draft, would he be the 5th pick? I don't think so.
3. I don't mean to single you out, because you're not the first and DEFINITELY not the worst, but really? This team is so solid top to bottom that the TOP FIVE prospects from this draft can't make the FINAL FIFTEEN of a TWENTY-NINE win team?

Sigh... I should have known you would spoil that post, Jason.
1. Jerry Colangelo and Tom Thibodeau have a great relationship. Jerry's son, Bryan, is the new POBO and GM in Philadelphia. They're not blood-related, but it was a joke based off the Colangelo/Thibodeau relationship.
2. Noel would probably go No. 3 overall in this class knowing what we know right now. He just turned 22-years old and has produced all over the court over his two seasons in the league. He's also one of a handful of bigs that can switch and guard perimeter players effectively.
3. That's not the case, and nobody said as much. There just aren't many, if any, bigs at the very top of this class that have the two-way potential and proven production that would be worth a top-five selection. Make no mistake about it, we need bigs. You know this too because you've brought Sabonis up. If I could get Noel for the pick, I'd much rather do that than trade down with the vision of getting Sabonis and someone else.

Ha, good stuff Cam! Such a classic movie scene, it's worth seeing the original.

I am excited to hear that Colangelo and Thibodeau are friends. Not because I think well of the Colangelos. But if Thibodeau is anything like them, that means the Wolves are about to become awesome and he is here just in time to take the credit. Just keep Thibs away from Penny Hardaway and Jeremy Roenick. The main reason for the joke is that I just think people stopped referring to people as uncle the day after Milton Berle died.
Once again, recent production and current contract parameters. Last year, he had a minus 9 PER split at the 4 and a minus 5 PER split at the 5. He is scheduled to make $4.4m next year, then is subject to $5.85m Q/O or UFA. So you're giving up the #5 pick for a guy who is not good, but if he suddenly becomes good in a contract year (Brian Cardinal just called and said it happens sometimes), he gets a large contract. Once again, not worth the #5 pick.
I am also disappointed in the talent level of the pure 5's at the top of the draft. The solution to that is not to give away the #5 pick. It is to trade down. If MIN's pick is better than both of PHX's picks, they are a perfect partner. DEN has a lottery pick and #15. BOS has a lottery pick and #16. I don't know if a chart exists that shows the value of each pick like a couple of people have developed for the NFL, but there has to be a better way than Nerlans Noel.
