Wolves Summer league thread

One thing to remember is Dunn is 22, older than Wiggs, Zach and KAT. Physically he is ready to produce right now. All indications point to starting the season with a strong 3 guard rotation, with a 4th guard in Tyus ready if needed. I have no doubt Ricky and Dunn can play some together, especially if Ricky continues to show more promise as a three point shooter (which he did the 2nd half of last season). Dunn no doubt has a scorers mentality and actually may feel more inclined to be aggressive next to Ricky.

This is the strongest core of guards this franchise has ever had. A glaring weakness over the years has been the drop-off in play when Ricky goes out, not to mention shoddy 2 guard play (or playing Wiggins there which I never liked). Now with Dunn added, and Tyus and Zach maturing (hopefully Zach above the neck), this area of weakness may actually become a strength.

The Rubio-Dunn debate is ridiculous and boring. Rubio is a good starting NBA PG. Dunn is a college PG who aspires to be a good NBA PG. I like Dunn's potential, but neither his college stats nor anything I've seen from him on the court blow me away. Ideally both Ricky and Dunn will get a lot of minutes and contribute positively to a 40+ win season and playoff birth. If we believe draft night reports, Thibs was apparently anxious to trade both Rick and Dunn for Butler. Makes you wonder about how much Thibs values either one. But I like both of them and look forward to seeing both on the court together and separately.

I tend to believe the reports that Thibs offered that package before Dunn fell to 5. I am assuming that a deal was near and when Dunn fell to 5, Thibs tried to change course and make a deal happen with another piece, likely LaVine, and the Bulls said no. Or maybe the Bulls were good with LaVine but Thibs offered Gorgui or Bazz instead. Either way I think trading Dunn was a deal breaker for the Wolves.

I tend to think whatever package that Thibs may have actually offered say more about how he values Butler more than how now he things of the assets he would be sending out. Like Jon K said as much as Thibs and Layden both love Dunn they would have been willing to move him in a package to get Butler.

I could see Dunn pushing for extra minutes at sg. It's not outside the realm of possibility that he challenge's Ricky or Lavine for their jobs next year. Let's see what kind of fire that lights under both those guys. That's a good thing.

Edit: I agree with Pork's post also.

Personally in that game from Dunn I saw a potentially terrific attacking SG that also is unselfish enough to pass the ball and good enough to initiate offense. He played Mostly SG.

Here is another comp that I think has a lot of merit. Oladipo. Watch some highlights of Dipo and I think there certainly are some parallax to their games and I think it's quite possible Dunn could be a slimiest SG that Dipo is. They have basically the same height length measurables. I really think we got a guy that potentially can play SG AND PG really effectively and if so he would fit well with all the other young guards on the team. Let's enjoy this guy and see how he can make an impact on the floor regardless of what position he plays.

I know people have said this but let's hold the breaks josh Selby and Glen rice Jr have won 2 of the last 4 SL MVPs, with that said I was impressed by Dunn and am excited to see what he does on Sunday. But I will never understand the argument of choosing one or the other. We have them both and if Dunn becomes better than rubio (I doubt in his rookie year) we have an advantage that nobody in the league has and that is 2 top 15 pgs and possible 2 top 5 defensive pgs. Let's be happy that that potential is a possibly instead of choosing which one we can kick out the door faster

Does anyone remember what Jonny Flynn scored in his first summer league game? I was there courtside and remember he looked really good and brought fans to their feet a couple times with great explosive dunks. But I can't remember his final numbers.

Yeah, he made those three dunks. Problem is he missed his other 7 shots.

You're shortchanging Simmons, q...he was damn close to a quadruple double with his 7 TOs! Yeah, he's fun to watch and will be a dynamic player someday, but I think his rookie year will be a disaster. Poor shooting and carelessness with the basketball will really hold him back.

ROY is a crap shoot this year, as I think the most NBA-ready of the top 5 picks is our guy Dunn...we could have 3 in a row! Simmons or Ingram may end up with the award, because they are the only 2 of the first 10 picks that I think will get consistent starter's minutes. But Dunn has been by far the most impressive rookie I have seen in the early going.

If Dunn were going in as the starter j would think ROY would be a great possibility. His lack of minutes will limit the chances of that happening.

I agree. It will be interesting to see how Rubio performs coming off a year where he is not rehabbing in the offseason. If Rubio goes down again I see Dunn getting big minutes.

I think I remember one of the most exciting moments was him coming straight down the lane and going up with the ball cocked way back in one hand for a dunk but getting fouled by the defender so he didn't finish, but his audaciousness and elevation was so crazy the place went nuts. The commentators interrupted what they were saying to gawk.
