Kek, you don't think the WNBA has invited a lot of this by their own actions over the years? Dan Wetzel wrote a nice column for ESPN (of all places!) on the WNBA's complicity in the politicization of the sport. And he only touches on the very recent past.

But I agree with you that it takes away from the product on the court, which is increasingly compelling for basketball fans of all stripes.

I think you’re absolutely right that the League has created much of that noise through their actions and lack of action. It’s a horribly managed League that needs to put the clamps down on the pettiness and focus on promoting the League as a source of exciting basketball entertainment with stars like AJ, Clark and our own Miles among others. The WNBA needs a David Stern. Sadly, their current leadership is worse than Larry O’Brien and that’s REALLY BAD.

I think you’re absolutely right that the League has created much of that noise through their actions and lack of action. It’s a horribly managed League that needs to put the clamps down on the pettiness and focus on promoting the League as a source of exciting basketball entertainment with stars like AJ, Clark and our own Miles among others. The WNBA needs a David Stern. Sadly, their current leadership is worse than Larry O’Brien and that’s REALLY BAD.

Think all these things can be true
1) WNBA has terrible leadership at the top of the league and Cathy is a terrible comish

2) league has different dynamics that we have never seen what puts the league in a weird spot light. I mean last week we had a player get screened by her ex gf, while guarding her current girlfriend, with the person who her ex gf cheated on her with is on the bench. No league has these dynamics.

3) Sophie Cunningham knows what she is doing and setting her self up long term financially. Makes statement unprompted about trans people where she knows will make headlines and there will be discussion because the WNBA has been by far the most inclusive league for trans fans. So she knows there will discourse about this. Sophie is a career role player (and a very solid one) who is now the 3rd most followed wnba player on Instagram. She has gain 1 million followers in 10 days. She knows what she is doing.

4) There are currently 0 professional biological men in women’s sports, there are 10 in college sports, there have been 12 in the last 10 years of the Minnesota state high school league. (Only one was a good player in a sport). You are 10x more likely to be struck my lightning in your lifetime than have your daughter to be teammates with a trans athlete in the state of MN. People are creating an issue out of legit nothing.

5) The people who are riled up about this are the same people shit on women’s sports and the WNBA. Do they really care about protecting women or do they care about their own political agenda. People who never applied for credentials in their life were applying for the Fever/Lynx game not to ask questions about the game but about trans athletes. I feel so bad for Caitlin Clark, I’m not even a fan of her but she is getting so much abuse online today because she didn’t take a side when asked about it.

6) overall I agree with Sophie take once they get to HS.


Sorry for the rant, it was just probably the best game of the game yesterday and all my Twitter feed so trans vs anti trans arguments. It drives me nuts.

Meh. But why focus on issues that impact hundreds of millions when you can rail on and on and on about issues that affect a few dozen?

As for hoops... I know the WNBA opened the game up a bit this season... but damn. The scoring is off the charts. Lynx up to 93 ppg and they're only 2nd in the league... and 5th in pace.

As a PG guy, I need to catch more games to see Miles...

I work in the mental health field. I’ve worked with people who have identified with not their biological sex and older people who have transitioned.


I just want to say a couple of things, I mostly agree that making that big of a decision shouldn’t happen before you are 18, due to your brain not being fully developed (brain not fully developed at 18 either but you are a legal adult). But when you are 18, you are an adult, it’s your life do want to do with it doesn’t “hurt” anyone else.

In my experience making a transition is almost never pushed by the parents. I would mostly say in my experience the kid is usually isolated and made to feel less than others. The brain is a unique, scary, and awesome thing. Usually a lot of it comes from trauma and a lack of community and belonging. Everyone wants to feel wanted. Mean shit we are all on this message board for some type of community that’s why we haven’t left in 15+ years.

And I think that is what Cheryl is saying. I don’t think she is saying let’s have all these kids change sex. But sports is awesome, sports is probably the biggest community team building thing you will ever get in life. Let’s not isolate kids that are different than us, let’s teach them skills on building friendships, working together, being physically healthy. Let’s not isolate the kids that say “why am I the way I am” even more that leads to more depression, isolation and more mental health symptoms/disorders.

Sports is a connector and a separator in my opinion. And like Cheryl mentioned at her presser on Saturday at practice, things change when scholarships are involved and competing at the highest level. Like on the Minnesota professional women’s soccer team there is a born female who transitioned to a male who is their starting goalie.

There is nuance to every situation, discussion is important, also Tim tell me to STFU if you want me to stop because I will because this is not fully about basketball. And I like talking hoops with you all in this silly little community we have built from so facets of life
